I have disturbing news. Today we learned about a series of actions coming from leaders in Washington, D.C. that violate our American values.
We learned that they are moving forward with plans to waste billions of taxpayer dollars on an outrageous wall when the border crossings it seeks to block are at some of their lowest levels in decades. They will start punishing sanctuary cities that protect undocumented immigrants. And they're gearing up for even more actions, like banning refugees or individuals from majority-Muslim countries.
But we are a nation of immigrants. Nearly every one of our families came here from somewhere else. And the diversity, youth, and energy that comes with that has made us the country we are today. Immigrants and refugees have contributed to our communities, paid taxes, and even put their lives on the line to defend our country in the armed forces.
Turning away from others won't make us stronger. It will undermine what has made our country great for centuries. At moments like these, we need to stand up for our values and stay united in the face of fear and division.
We've fought for comprehensive immigration reform for years now, from bipartisan bills in Congress to supporting DACA -- a program that has granted nearly three-quarters of a million young people who are Americans in every way but on paper the ability to work and contribute to our country.
We won't be silent now while some at the top erode our American values by targeting the vulnerable.
We're better than that -- our compassion and ability to welcome newcomers is an example to the world.
Everyone has a role to play in building this country, neighborhood by neighborhood, and town by town -- no matter what your last name is, what your religion is, or where your family came from.
That's what we believe. Say you do, too.

Saphira & Ventura Gallery to Open Branch in Brazil
The new space in the São Paulo capital is dedicated to the exhibition of works by artists, national and international.
On January 31, the New York International Contemporary Art Society - Saphira & Ventura Gallery will open its new branch in the Hotel Transamerica Opera, in São Paulo. The Brazilian owners, Alcinda Saphira and Louis Ventura, are based in New York and represent established and emerging artists of different nationalities of modern and contemporary art. The new space will also have a store where you can purchase works and accessories made by artists, and a bistro with a menu prepared with organic ingredients.
At the opening event, the public will be able to enjoy the exhibition "Destaques NYC 2016", composed of works by artists represented by the gallery during the year and which stand out for their authenticity, unusual forms and original techniques. Among the names that will be presented at the exhibition are: Neil Kerman, Abe Shainberg, Laura McClanahan, David Wiener, Oenone Hammersley, Susan Marx, Mounia Boutaleb, Nicolas Sabine, Sankhya Jejurikar, and Brazilians Odair Mindelo, Patricia Figueiredo, Antonio Spinosa , Maximo Cedrine, Rene Nascimento, Jackson Carvalho, Angerami and Amaro.
According to Saphira, the opening of the gallery in Brazil has an emotional value and is an important step towards the expansion of the concept of art in the country. "It is critical for Saphira & Ventura Gallery - already consolidated in New York - to promote works by emerging artists in Brazil and bring the country's art to the international scene. The artistic exchange is essential to spread the art and exhibit works expressing different cultures and looks around the world, "said the curator.
And the art will not simply be hanging on the wall. The bistro, that will function as part of the gallery, is inspired by the artists represented. Dishes will be directly inspired and named after them and their works. Meals varying between salads, hot dishes, pasta and detox juices have a unique concept of cuisine.
For the CEO of the Saphira & Ventura Gallery, the new unit represents a set of efforts to promote modern and contemporary art and contribute to Brazil's growth. "Even with the current economic scenario, we are committed to generating new opportunities for Brazilians. We feel it is our role to encourage, disseminate and protect art on its many faces in the country in which we have roots,” said the gallery owner.
The gallery, which will be open to the public, offers in addition to the work of artist representation a range of services including: career plan, art consulting, design, press office for the art market and an online gallery for advertising and sales of construction. The organization also partners with other galleries in Paris, Madrid, Barcelona and London.
