Friend -- Voters in North Carolina and Pennsylvania scored decisive wins this week in U.S. Supreme Court decisions that assured they’ll vote with fair congressional maps in place for the 2022 elections.

In the image below, you can see that there has been a slew of recent rulings in lawsuits that have advanced fair redistricting -- several of which our movement directly supported. You can directly contribute to everything we do in our mission to protect democracy, including this kind of work, here.

As you can see, our movement has effectively blocked Republicans from replicating their 2011 gerrymandering in many states, but we still have our work cut out for us to secure fair maps for the decade.

We know Republicans have proven time and again that they will do whatever it takes in these states and elsewhere to preserve partisan gerrymandering so they can lock in their own power.

It began in 2011 with their brazenly gerrymandered maps and continued when the conservative majority on the Supreme Court refused to put guardrails on partisan gerrymandering.

This year, we’ve witnessed their cravenness reach new heights with the obstruction of badly needed voting rights legislation and this latest judicial scheme to invalidate state court rulings, which could erode our federal system as we know it.

We know what we’re up against. We know the fight lives on in these four states and many others. And we know that every contribution made will help sustain our momentum and better prepare us for the fight ahead.

A year ago, it seemed like a done deal that Republicans could gerrymander their way into guaranteed power. Just look at these headlines from redistricting experts Ari Berman and David Daley written last summer.

Fast forward to last week when the Supreme Court allowed a fair map to stand in North Carolina -- one of the four southern states that could have given the GOP an easy path to the House majority.

PITCH FOR A FAIR FINAL FIVE! → It’s March and you know what that means: it’s time for the Final Five! Don’t worry, we’re not messing with any tournament formats, but there will still be plenty of court action and hopefully some upsets. That’s right: only five states are remaining that have not yet enacted congressional maps ahead of the 2022 elections: New Hampshire, Missouri, Louisiana, Florida, and Ohio (that’s still 59 congressional seats!). But with All On The Line’s full-court press, we might see some Cinderella stories in places where fair congressional maps might have once seemed like a fairy tale: NEW HAMPSHIRE: Gov. Sununu has promised to veto gerrymandered maps before and has called the ones passed by the House “funky.” He’s hoping the Senate improves the maps passed by the House, but if they don’t, we’ll need to hold him to his promise. MISSOURI: Even with control of the legislature and governor’s mansion, Republicans are having an internal scrimmage to see how far they can push their extreme gerrymander. LOUISIANA: Gov. John Bel Edwards just used his gubernatorial veto to block a map that failed to create a second district where Black voters could elect their preferred candidate. The legislature may attempt a veto override, so this one is in overtime. FLORIDA: Gov. DeSantis worked redistricting into his presidential campaign game plan at the expense of Floridians. He presented one of the most extreme gerrymanders we’ve seen and threatened to veto the legislature’s maps that are less extreme than his. OHIO: Despite the state Supreme Court striking down the first congressional map, the Republican-controlled commission keeps shooting their shot and passing gerrymandered maps. We’re supporting voters who are challenging their latest attempt in court. There are two common threads in all of these states: 1.) The most extreme map manipulators in each state are running into a tough defense and 2.) We’re running an active offense -- with hard-hitting digital ads that connect voters and their elected officials, through our work to support voters in lawsuits that demand fair maps in the courts, and other plays to make voters heard. Recent wins:
✅ Voters in North Carolina and Pennsylvania will use fair maps this fall thanks to SCOTUS denying Republicans' last-ditch attempts to install gerrymandered maps.
✅ The Wisconsin Supreme Court empowered voters by picking a map submitted by Governor Evers over the Republican-drawn gerrymandered map.
✅ Ohio voters have challenged gerrymandered maps multiple times and won. Just last night, the Ohio Supreme Court struck down gerrymandered legislative maps for the THIRD time!

States on the horizon:
➡️ Legislators in New Hampshire passed a gerrymandered congressional map this morning -- but the governor already promised to veto it!
➡️ The Supreme Court allowed Alabama’s gerrymandered congressional map to be used in the 2022 midterm elections -- but plan to hear oral arguments on this discriminatory map this fall.
➡️ Republicans in Ohio have drawn many gerrymandered maps -- luckily, the Ohio Supreme Court keeps deeming them unconstitutional and sending them back to the drawing board.

Like President Obama said: “The fight for fair maps is not over.”

There are five states that still don’t have a congressional map for the midterm elections. And recent court decisions have opened the door for other maps to be redrawn down the road.

Earlier this week, President Obama announced a new class of 105 Obama Foundation Leaders. These changemakers will join three 35-member regional cohorts representing Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Europe as part of our Obama Foundation Leaders program.  The 2023 class of Obama Leaders represent 75 nations and territories and are working on a wide range of issues, from addressing the climate crisis to advocating for refugee and disability rights.  I’m excited to introduce you to three of our Leaders today, and I hope you’ll check out all of our Leaders’ unique and compelling stories at obama.org/leaders and on Twitter and Instagram. Thokozile Nhlumayo, South Africa   Thokozile “Thoko” Nhlumayo is working to get young people involved in government across Africa. She founded the #NotTooYoungToLead Movement, which focuses on increasing the number of young people African governments have in office. She also serves as the Secretary General of the International Youth Parliament.   Thoko launched the LGBTQ+ Political Leaders Program in South Africa and Namibia, which seeks to achieve full equality for LGBTQ+ people by building, supporting, and advancing a diverse network of LGBTQ+ public leaders.  Thokozile’s own experience of being denied opportunities to hold public office due to her age and gender sparked her passion for advocating for the inclusion of young people in leadership roles. Kim Lim, Malaysia   Kim Lim is a co-founder and CEO of PichaEats, a humanitarian venture on a mission to serve great meals while helping Malaysian refugees rebuild their lives.  The organization identifies families who can cook, trains them to become professional chefs, assists with branding and marketing efforts, and coordinates the logistics so that the food can reach catering clients. Since its inception in 2016, PichaEats has collaborated with 35 chefs, catered 350,000 meals, and spurred 2.5 million Malaysian ringgit in profits for refugee families.  Kim is passionate about how social entrepreneurship can become a tool to alleviate poverty, provide access to quality education, and restore dignity.  Mihai Toader-Pasti, Romania   Mihai Toader-Pasti is working to create sustainable micro-communities across Romania through the organization he co-founded, IntreVecini. He also co-founded Romania's most-awarded sustainability non-profit, EFdeN, which connects students and young professionals with sustainability efforts.  Under his leadership, the EFdeN team designed and built two of the world's most sustainable homes and Europe's highest scoring certified green-building project. Mihai believes that sustainable dwellings are simply one component of a successful sustainability movement, and he also incorporates community engagement, nature, energy, culture, and the arts into his work. Throughout the Leaders program, Thokozile, Kim, Mihai, and their fellow Leaders will learn from and connect with each other and receive leadership training to help them make an even bigger impact. After leaving the USO center, they visited trainees across the base that were unable to visit the center due to training schedules.
