“Our movement has effectively blocked Republicans from replicating their 2011 gerrymandering in many states, but we still have our work cut out for us to secure fair maps for the decade.” -- A.G. Holder

With only a handful of states left to finish drawing their maps -- and a few more settling their district lines in court -- the country’s congressional map is slated to be the most balanced in decades.

We’ve come a long way. Just a few months ago, redistricting experts believed the Republicans would be able to easily gerrymander the five additional congressional districts they needed to secure the House majority -- even if they didn’t secure the support of a single additional voter.

Now that’s looking more and more unlikely. Thanks in no small part to every person who fought for redistricting reforms, advocated for their communities, and held map manipulators accountable.

Can you help support this movement in the final stretch?

The good news is that Republicans can’t just gerrymander their way into taking the House majority as they did in 2011.

The bad news is that Republicans are not just relying on map manipulating:

→ They also spent the past decade tipping the scales with egregious voter suppression efforts.
→ Since 2020, right-wing leaders have increasingly focused on installing partisan sympathizers as election officials in an effort to “take over all the elections."
→ And the GOP has consistently obstructed redistricting and election reform efforts nationally and at the state level.

All On The Line is working to protect voting rights on multiple fronts -- and we’re building out plans to continue this work. But as A.G. Holder said: “Our success has always depended on us starting strong and finishing strong this redistricting cycle.”

NYT: A Potential Rarity in American Politics: A Fair Congressional Map "For years, America’s congressional map favored Republicans over Democrats. But that may not remain the case for long. In a departure from a decades-long pattern in American politics, this year’s national congressional map is poised to be balanced between the two parties, with a nearly equal number of districts that are expected to lean Democratic and Republican for the first time in more than 50 years."

Sula -- Before this round of redistricting began, it was possible that Republicans could just gerrymander their way into the House majority by flipping six districts.

But as Nate Cohn noted in the New York Times last week, the congressional map is shaping up to be “surprisingly fair” and “defies the expectations of many analysts."

All On The Line and the fair map movement are a key reason that map manipulators weren’t able to secure a gerrymandered advantage -- but the work is not done.

NYT: In Ohio, a Standoff Over Political Maps Threatens the Next Elections Years ago, voters created a commission to make political maps fairer. Now the State Supreme Court is blocking maps drawn by the Republican-led commission, saying nothing has changed.

The Ohio Supreme Court rejected legislative maps for the third time because they deemed that partisan gerrymanders made the maps unconstitutional.

But Ohio is now in uncharted territory.

According to the New York Times, constitutional scholars and Ohio political experts believe the Republican-led redistricting commission was trying to “run out the clock” and force the Court to approve gerrymandered legislative maps in time for the state’s primary. But voters in Ohio believe the Court has the authority to adopt its own map -- like we’ve seen in North Carolina -- if the commission keeps refusing to comply with the law.

As this standoff in Ohio unfolds, we are helping voters in seven states challenge gerrymandered maps or defend fair maps in court. Can we count on your support?

With legislative maps in flux, the Ohio Supreme Court is also deciding whether to approve or reject the latest congressional map -- after rejecting a version earlier this year on the grounds of partisan gerrymandering.

All On The Line is helping voters in Ohio hold map manipulators accountable and demand action from legislators to ensure the upcoming primary election is fair.
