Slate:
"Democrats had a plan [for 2021 redistricting], and built the infrastructure, to... litigate where Republicans overreached, pass ballot initiatives against gerrymandering, and raise more public awareness of redistricting before the cycle began."
Donate to help us execute our plan

Sula, when The Washington Post asked me what’s next for the NDRC, I told them honestly: There are no vacations in sight. Because while the initial round of map drawing may be wrapping up, our work is far from finished:

1) The 2022 elections will be important for ongoing and future redistricting.
2) We need to analyze our strategy, what worked and what didn’t, and figure out how to apply it going forward.
3) There’s a huge amount of ongoing redistricting litigation.
4) And Republicans are pioneering new strategies to gerrymander, so we have to stay on our toes.

You can help: Will you rush a donation now to prepare us for the next phase of our fight?

My take is that everyone reading this has two options right now:

1) You can assume redistricting is over – and risk 10 years of GOP map manipulation.
2) You can heed the words of President Obama when he says "the fight for fair maps is not over," and chip in.

Will you chip in to help us keep working for fair redistricting?

Sula -- We don’t typically put much faith in the conservative majority on the Supreme Court to protect our democracy, but they surprised us on this one:

VOX: Republicans face a significant, but temporary, defeat in the Supreme Court -- The Supreme Court handed down a pair of orders Monday evening that leave in place congressional maps drawn by the North Carolina and Pennsylvania Supreme Courts — although both orders could prove to be very temporary.”

This is a huge win for fair redistricting in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Voters in these states will be able to vote in fair congressional districts this cycle -- a win for democracy.

Here’s the thing -- while the Supreme Court decided not to intervene on these maps before the midterm elections, they left the door open for future challenges on maps.

It’s becoming more and more apparent that this decade’s maps might not all be finalized in 2022. We set a mid-month goal of raising $25,000 to prepare for the work ahead. Will you make a donation right now to support our efforts?

The conservative majority on the United States Supreme Court has a track record of supporting Republicans determined to undermine our democracy.

→ In the 2019 Rucho decision, the Supreme Court refused to weigh in and put guardrails on partisan gerrymandering.
→ At the beginning of the pandemic, the Court refused to extend Wisconsin’s deadline for submitting absentee ballots.
→ And just last month, the Court refused to intervene on a map that blatantly discriminated against Black voters in Alabama.

We should celebrate this win for voters in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. But there are four states that have not finished their map-drawing process yet -- and many where voters are still challenging gerrymandered maps or defending fair maps in court.

Can we count on you to pitch in and support our movement?

Sula -- Voters in North Carolina and Pennsylvania scored decisive wins this week in U.S. Supreme Court decisions that assured they’ll vote with fair congressional maps in place for the 2022 elections.

In the image below, you can see that there has been a slew of recent rulings in lawsuits that have advanced fair redistricting -- several of which our movement directly supported. You can directly contribute to everything we do in our mission to protect democracy, including this kind of work, here.

NC Status: Fair congressional maps adopted by state court and confirmed for 2022 elections; court-ordered 2023 redraw anticipated PA Status: Fair congressional map adopted by state court and confirmed for 2022 elections; federal litigation ongoing with potential 2024 election impacts OH Status: Gerrymandered congressional maps overturned once by state court; state litigation ongoing with potential 2022 impacts WI Status: Most extreme gerrymander rejected by state court; federal litigation ongoing with potential 2022 impacts

As you can see, our movement has effectively blocked Republicans from replicating their 2011 gerrymandering in many states, but we still have our work cut out for us to secure fair maps for the decade.

We know Republicans have proven time and again that they will do whatever it takes in these states and elsewhere to preserve partisan gerrymandering so they can lock in their own power.

It began in 2011 with their brazenly gerrymandered maps and continued when the conservative majority on the Supreme Court refused to put guardrails on partisan gerrymandering.

This year, we’ve witnessed their cravenness reach new heights with the obstruction of badly needed voting rights legislation and this latest judicial scheme to invalidate state court rulings, which could erode our federal system as we know it.

We know what we’re up against. We know the fight lives on in these four states and many others. And we know that every contribution made will help sustain our momentum and better prepare us for the fight ahead.

Will you pitch in $10, or whatever amount makes sense for you, to continue fighting in and out of court for the future of our democracy?

The GOP is a mess, Sula. A desperate mess.

FLORIDA: Infighting as legislative leaders push forward a bad gerrymander and Governor DeSantis tries to threaten them into passing an even worse one.

MISSOURI: More infighting over which of two terrible gerrymanders to push through.

OHIO: The state Supreme Court keeps knocking down Republicans' gerrymandered maps, but they keep drawing more.

Here's the bottom line: They're fighting tooth and nail to pass the most manipulated maps they can. Which means WE have to keep fighting tooth and nail to stop them.

You have a choice in this moment: You can tune out and let Republicans get away with gerrymandering – which is exactly what will happen if folks stop paying attention. Or, you can double down on your commitment to fair redistricting and pitch in now.

President Obama said that "just because Republicans couldn’t replicate what they did in 2011 doesn’t mean we can relax" – and he's absolutely right.

Hi there,

Now that many states are finalizing their maps, we’re officially in the last phase of the map-drawing process. We thought this would be a good time to check in with our community -- how are you feeling about all of this and what’s going on in your state?

So, we’re asking our top supporters to participate in a quick survey. Can you take a few minutes to answer a couple of questions?

Thanks in advance!

Amazing news, Sula!

Tweet from the NDRC that reads: BREAKING! The Wisconsin Supreme Court has adopted the congressional and legislative maps proposed by Governor Evers. These maps represent forward progress from the extremely gerrymandered maps Wisconsin has had for the last decade. As Gov. Evers said, 'Hell. Yes.'

But progress in one state does NOT mean our work is done. Even in Wisconsin, we’re already facing appeals from Republicans. Pitch in to help us protect the redistricting wins we’ve achieved across the country and keep them coming!

While our movement has had several wins in court recently, don’t forget that the GOP gerrymandered in states (like Texas and Georgia) across the country in 2021 and could still do so in more (like Florida and Missouri) in 2022. At the same time, we’re waiting on the results of voter-filed lawsuits in places like Kansas and Ohio.

The bottom line? We have a lot of work left to ensure fair maps for ALL – so we’re going to need your help!

Will you celebrate the fair-map victories in Wisconsin and other states by rushing a donation to the NDRC today?
