The New York Times:
"Justice Dept. Files Voting Rights Suit Against Texas Over New Map"

This is HUGE, Sula! The Department of Justice has filed its first lawsuit of the 2021 redistricting cycle, taking on Texas' gerrymandered maps. According to The Times, the Justice Department is arguing that those maps "would essentially make ballots cast by Black and Latino voters count for less than those of others."

This is exactly the NDRC's position, and why we've been working so hard to end gerrymandering in Texas. Real quick -- will you help us build on this exciting momentum by rushing an immediate donation to support our work across the country?

"Attorney General Merrick Garland’s announcement on Monday marked the Biden administration’s first major legal action on redistricting."
-- The Washington Post

"The DOJ’s lawsuit is a tremendous step in the fight to hold Texas Republicans accountable and return power back to the people -- where it belongs."
-- Former A.G. Eric H. Holder, Jr.

Attorney General Garland's announcement was a critical step in the fight against gerrymandering, and he restated on Monday that the Justice Department would "use all available authorities and resources to continue protecting the right to vote."

This is great news for our fight against manipulated maps, but it's not going to be enough on its own. Lawsuits take time; the best thing we can do is fight NOW, on the ground, in the states that are still drawing their maps.

And that means we need to ask you for help, Sula: Will you rush an immediate donation to help us do everything we can to protect fair maps and the right to vote?

Uh oh, team --

NBC News:
"Aggressive gerrymandering may make elections far less competitive, experts say"

But here's the good news: People are rising up against gerrymandering, and the NDRC and our affiliates are proud to support them!

"Hundreds gather at Capitol to push back on GOP redistricting plan"
-- Wisconsin Public Radio

"Latino voters sue Texas over ‘absurd’ redistricting plan"
-- The Independent

"GOP drops challenge to new Oregon congressional districts"
-- Associated Press

Over the past four years the NDRC has helped dozens of Democrats win elections to get a seat at the redistricting table, as well as supported several states in passing redistricting reforms. That work is now paying off! But many challenges remain. We didn't expect Republicans to be this brazen -- in Ohio, for example, they're trying to give themselves control over 80% of the state's congressional districts!

We urgently need more resources to fight, Sula -- and time is quickly running out. PLEASE, will you help us build on our record of wins and give everything you've got to the fight for fairness and justice?

I believe ending partisan gerrymandering is one of the most important battles in the fight to preserve our democracy -- and essential to the work we’re doing to restore and expand voting rights. - HRC
Secretary Clinton is joining President Obama and A.G. Holder in the fight to end gerrymandering.
But she needs you in the fight, too:
Gerrymandering is a systemic problem. And it will not change unless people like us demand change and accountability. - HRC
With time running out to impact the redistricting process, we urgently need your help to secure fair elections.

Sula -- As Congress continues working to strengthen protections for voting rights, one issue that must be addressed is partisan gerrymandering. A recent op-ed in The Washington Post did not mince words when it comes to the dangers of failing to act:

A recent Washington Post article said: Unless Congress acts quickly, Americans are on the verge of some of the most aggressive gerrymandering in the country’s history. Inevitably, communities of color, which provided almost all of the country’s growth over the past decade, will bear the brunt of this anti-democratic line-drawing.

As alarming as it may sound, it’s spot on. The Census Bureau just released the data states need to draw their maps yesterday, and this expedited redistricting cycle will be over before we know it.

So unless we move swiftly, Republicans will take full advantage of the ability the Supreme Court has given them to gerrymander the maps. In some cases, the results could be so bad that Republican majorities are impossible to defeat, no matter how folks vote on Election Day!

The NDRC is working around the clock to fight back and end GOP gerrymandering for good. But with the redistricting process already underway, we’re running out of time to make an impact -- and we’re counting on your support to keep going!
