Organizing for Action

The Senate just voted to eliminate protections that were put in place to ensure Supreme Court justices -- who serve lifetime appointments -- are within the mainstream and have broad bipartisan support.

It's never been clearer that Majority Leader McConnell and his caucus are acting on purely partisan motives. A whopping 67 percent of voters didn't want them to "go nuclear" -- but instead, they rewrote the rules in their favor.

This is a reckless move that will grant a lifetime appointment to a judge who couldn't even reach consensus support -- and it could have consequences for decades to come.

It's up to all of us to keep letting members of Congress know we won't stand for these kinds of unprecedented and irresponsible moves, and we won't stop taking action when they try new ways to bend the system to their will.

Add your name if you're ready to double down and show leaders in Congress that we're paying attention, and we're not going away -- we're going to stay strong and keep organizing, because we deserve better.

In February, people like you flooded town halls and made your priorities known. You spoke up about the chaos that repealing Obamacare would create, and you better believe that made an impact. When congressional leaders got back to Washington, they found themselves without the support they needed to repeal Obamacare.

Congress is going on recess again tomorrow, and we're going to use the opportunity to keep training and supporting each other to hold our representatives accountable. Let's make it clear to them that reckless moves like the one they made this afternoon -- which undermine one of the most important parts of our democracy -- are unacceptable.

Keep the pressure on -- say you're not going to back down.

Leadership in a Challenging Century

Columbia Global Centers | Rio de Janeiro in partnership with the Picker Center for Executive Education and Training of the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) is offering Leadership in a Challenging Century - a program designed for mid-career management professionals as a platform for those looking for an opportunity to learn new pertinent skills, to acquire specific knowledge about different topics, and to reflect about their daily practices along with colleagues from the public, private and nonprofit sectors.

Building skills to strengthen one’s professional profile

Competent and experienced professionals, managers from different fields will contribute as well as gain and exchange ideas in this dynamic, short, eight-day intensive program. The course focuses on acquiring critical tools and knowledge to analyze, problem solve and make better informed decisions for your employer and your own professional career. Columbia’s renowned faculty and successful practitioners will help equip the management professional with confidence, knowledge and skills necessary to engage peers and subordinates, in order to maximize team productivity and enhance results.

Curriculum and methodology

The Leadership in a Challenging Century program consists of a total of nine lectures and eight site visits complementing the face to face lectures on the Columbia University campus in New York City. A combination of multiple learning methodologies – lectures, site visits, case studies, online lectures and workshops – lends itself to the most effective way of imparting knowledge to the busy manager, who is looking for professional development, but does not have the time to invest in a longer term degree. Columbia University professors as well as invited practitioners, will address the following topics: Leadership and Public Private Partnerships, Public Ethics, Communication in Organizations, Negotiation and Conflict Resolution, among others.

The students will have access to online readings through CourseWorks – a platform used by regular Columbia students. Moreover, informal gatherings will take place in New York during the two-week course to promote valuable networking among professionals of the Leadership in a Challenging Century program and other SIPA programs, such as the Master’s Program in Economic Policy Management, GEMPA (Global Executive Master’s in Public Administration) and EMPA (Executive Master’s in Public Administration).
