Good Manners - As Boas Maneiras
Marco Dutra, Juliana Rojas
Q&As with Marco Dutra and Juliana Rojas. Before the screening on 4/6, all ticket holders are invited to the LG Signature Lounge, featuring a complimentary bar, at the Walter Reade Theater.
An immaculately stylized twist on the monster movie, Dutra and Rojas’s second collaboration (following the acclaimed Hard Labor) inventively engages matters of race, class, and desire. Set in São Paulo, the narrative initially concerns the curious relationship between rich, white, pregnant socialite Ana (Marjorie Estiano) and her new housemaid Clara (Isabél Zuaa). As the two women grow closer, their rapport turns first sexual then shockingly macabre. Good Manners evolves into a werewolf movie unlike any other, a delirious and compulsively watchable cross between Disney and Jacques Tourneur. A Distrib Films US release.

Brazilian Latin Grammy Winner
Vanessa da Mata
Opening Act(s): Aline Muniz
Thursday, April 5, 2018
Latin Grammy winning songstress Vanessa da Mata is one of the biggest stars in Brazilian music today. Here irresistible mix of reggae, funk and Brazilian pop have delighted fans around the world for over 15 years. After a highly successful US debut tour in 2017, Da Mata returns with the "Caixinha de Musica (Music Box) Tour” with stops in Miami Beach, Doral, Orlando, Atlanta, New York and Baton Rouge.
Born in Mato Grosso, Brazil, in 1976, da Mata grew up listening to venerated artists like Antonio Carlos Jobim, Milton Nascimento, and Luiz Gonzaga, as well as the sounds of Rio she picked up on her radio. At 15, she relocated to Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, and began performing in clubs, soon moving to São Paulo to continue her career. She joined a reggae band, even singing with the famed Jamaican group Black Uhuru for a stint, while playing basketball and working as a model in her free time.
Da Mata teamed up with Chico César, and wrote the song "A Força Que Nunca Seca," the title track for icon Maria Bethânia's 1999 album, and soon she was also working on pieces for major stars like Daniela Mercury, Ana Carolina, and César himself. Now with some years of experience under her belt, da Mata decided to finally record her own solo material, releasing her self-titled debut in 2002. It was her next album, “Essa Boneca Tem Manual”, however, that really pushed her into the limelight, aided by the strength of the single "Ai Ai Ai." Three years later the singer's third album “Sim” won a Latin Grammy for “Best Album” and featured appearances from the acclaimed pianist João Donato and American rocker Ben Harper. The hit song “Boa Sorte” (Good Luck) with Harper reached the top of the charts in Brazil, South America and Europe. In 2018 Vanessa da Mata is touring to support the brand new release “Caixinha de Musica” (Music Box) on Sony Music, a live DVD and CD of her best songs with new arrangements and also some new material.

Andrés Bello Chair Professor Keila Grinberg Second Public Lecture | Passados Presentes: Slavery and Memory Tourism in Rio de Janeiro
Venue: KJCC Auditorium // 53 Washington Square South, New York
Recently, slavery has become an important theme in memory tourism. Just last year, in Rio de Janeiro, the Valongo wharf, which was the arrival place of the highest number of enslaved Africans in the Atlantic, was recognized as a UNESCO site, and is now being visited by tourists and students more than ever.
In this presentation, Professor Grinberg will discuss “Passados Presentes,” a public digital history project about slavery in Brazil. In doing so, she will also address the challenges in interpreting the slave past and in constructing historical narratives for both education and tourism through exhibits, information placards, and cell phone apps.

Manufacturing and Inflation Data Signal Economic Improvement
Overview: While the stock market was extremely volatile over the past week, mortgage markets were quiet. The reaction to the economic data and to the news on tariffs was muted, and mortgage rates ended the week nearly unchanged. On Wednesday, China announced potential new tariffs on 106 U.S. products in retaliation for the recent tariffs the U.S. said it would impose on some Chinese products. Some people think that the threat of new tariffs from the Trump administration is just a negotiating tactic to help obtain better terms of trade. The decision on whether to actually implement the new tariffs will not take place for many weeks. Increased concerns about an escalating trade war had a strongly negative impact on the stock market. On a more positive note, recent data revealed that the manufacturing sector continues to operate at strong levels. While it was a little lower than last month, the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Manufacturing Index was at 59.3 in April. Readings above 50 indicate an expansion in the sector. The ISM Services Index demonstrated similar strength. The most recent inflation data showed the expected slight increase. In February, the core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index was 1.6% higher than a year ago, up from an annual rate of 1.5% last month. This was the highest level since May 2017. Core PCE is the inflation indicator favored by the Fed, which has a stated target annual rate of 2.0%. Week Ahead Looking ahead, the monthly Employment Report will be released on Friday. This data on the number of jobs, the unemployment rate, and wage inflation will be the most highly anticipated economic data of the month. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) will come out on April 11. CPI is a widely followed monthly inflation report that looks at the price change for goods and services. The minutes from the March 21 Fed meeting also will come out on April 11. These detailed minutes provide additional insight into the debate between Fed officials about future monetary policy. |
