All On The Line

I was rereading Ratf**ked this weekend to prep discussion questions for book club and a certain passage stood out to me: "It is as if the mapmaker found the very line between hope and despair, and etched it onto these streets."

That line really resonated with me because it emphasizes the fact that where the lines are drawn actually impacts our communities in a real way. Although districts tend to be packed based on race or political affiliation, there's a distinct economic effect to where the lines are drawn too -- gerrymandering not only silences the voices of voters, but it can also disincentivize economic growth and progress.

At the end of the day, gerrymandering is all about maintaining power for the powerful and further disenfranchising communities. But we have a chance to change that!

RSVP to the first AOTL book club to gather with activists in your community who are committed to fighting for fair maps.

I'm excited about our first AOTL book club because we can really dig into why redistricting matters and see how gerrymandering in 2011 radically altered America.

It's also a chance to build the grassroots organizing structure we'll need to make sure we hold elected officials accountable during the redistricting process in 2021 -- many of the folks you meet at local book clubs will be fellow volunteers fighting for fair maps with you.

Book club is right around the corner, don't forget to RSVP or host your own! We'll send you details on what sections of the book to focus on and how to make the most of your book club event.

All On The Line

I just got off the phone with author David Daley and he's really excited to chat with you later this week at AOTL book club -- because the work we're doing together really will have an impact on the redistricting process.

David told me that in order to prepare for redistricting in 2021, we need to understand the history of gerrymandering and its impacts on our communities. And that's exactly why "Ratf**ked" was an obvious choice for our first book club read.

Will you join us at a book club event in your community?

The great thing about book club is that it's a chance to meet up with people in your community who also want to organize to end gerrymandering. That's why I've put together some discussion questions that not only dig into the book, but also kickstart the conversation on how to make a difference in New York.

If we want fair maps for the next decade, our work starts now.

Hope to see you at book club on Thursday!

-- Shehn

- I'm David Daley, author of "Ratf**ked: Why Your Vote Doesn't Count" and I'm so excited that All On The Line selected my book as the inaugural title for their new book club series -- because to be honest, our maps are ratf**cked.

Join me next week at an AOTL book club event to discuss how gerrymandering impacts our communities.

In politics, "ratf**k" has been used to describe tactics politicians use to manipulate electoral outcomes -- and partisan gerrymandering is the prime example of such manipulation. My book tells the story of the actual redrawing of the American political map and of our democracy itself. It's the story of how Republicans created Congressional and state legislative majorities so unbreakable that in states like North Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin, Florida and many more -- none of the outcomes would be in doubt until the next redistricting cycle. Democrats win more votes. Republicans win more seats.

This map manipulation was legal, breathtaking, and much of it happened in plain sight.

The next redistricting process begins in 2021, right after the 2020 elections. And if we don't hold politicians accountable now, they will ratf**k the maps again for the next decade. We cannot afford to let history repeat itself.

I've been inspired by the grassroots energy across the country -- it's why I'm so excited to join All On The Line's first book club night to do a Q&A.

RSVP to a local All On The Line book club event on August 29th!

It's going to take a strong nationwide movement to ensure fair maps -- but I believe in your power -- the power of an engaged public -- to make it happen.

Looking forward to book club,

-- David

Map manipulators want to use gerrymandering to rig elections and secure power for the next decade -- just like they did in 2011.
Rigged maps do not result in fair representation. And the impacts are longlasting. Case in point: The 2018 election results in Ohio, Wisconsin, and North Carolina. But we have a plan. And it starts with growing a strong grassroots movement to hold elected officials accountable. Introducing: Redistricting U -- The All On The Line team is bringing this training program to communities across the country. All On The Line

We hope you're as excited for tonight's book club as we are! David Daley, the author of "Ratf**ked", will be joining the livestream at 8pm ET to discuss his book and the landscape of gerrymandering.

Can't make it to a book club event tonight? Join us virtually by tuning into the livestream!

We're proud to kick off our book club series with an expert who literally wrote the book on redistricting. David will give us his take on the 2021 redistricting process and the battle for fair maps that has already begun in places like Michigan and New Hampshire.

We are counting on folks like you to help us fight for fair maps. This movement starts by talking to each other -- neighbor to neighbor, activist to activist. Excited to talk with you all tonight!

All On The Line
When President Obama announced Redistricting U yesterday, he said the foundation for successful organizing starts with training. And we couldn't agree more.

This fall, the All On The Line team is going to hit the road and visit communities across the country to strengthen the grassroots movement for fair maps with a new training initiative. But this is a big and ambitious program that's going to take a lot of resources to fund -- simply put, grassroots organizing can't happen without our grassroots donors.

As a Redistricting U Founding Member, you'll be the first to hear about training events near your community -- and you'll help make this entire program possible. Donate today to become a Founding Member.

With Redistricting U, we'll be empowering volunteers to be leaders in this fight and arming them with the knowledge, skills, and tools to impact redistricting. And each training will be customized to the state and local level. We'll start with the basics -- like what is the history and landscape of gerrymandering in your state? Is redistricting decided by state legislatures or independent commissions? Then we'll dive into building a state-specific game plan to take action on redistricting.

We know that this training initiative will be a success if we have strong grassroots support -- that's why we've set a goal of 1,000 Founding Members. To make this happen, we need 20 people to step up and be Founding Members from New York. Can we count on you to help reach our goal?

Whether you've been a part of the movement for hope and change since day one or you've just recently joined the fight for fair maps, your involvement is essential to our collective success. Together, we can empower the next generation of community leaders in the fight to end gerrymandering.
