NOVEMBER 2019 | EVENTS AT NEW YORK

Those who appreciate the genuine sound of Brazilian instrumental music will have the opportunity to enjoy the IV International Choro Festival in the City of New York. Brazilian Music Foundation (BMF), in partnership with Bossa Magazine, and Asuos Productions, will present the 5th Annual International Choro Festival, with a variety of interesting performances of Classic and Samba choros. The Festival collaborators will incorporate different cultures and participate in artistic exchanges between Brazil and the US.
The Festival also aspires to promote and preserve the “Choro” – a rich instrumental music tradition since the nineteenth century, known as the oldest musical style throughout Brazil. Our goal is to bring together local musicians with fellow musicians from Brazil and other countries to present traditional Choro as well as new compositions.
The festival first occurred in August 2015, and it was a great success. Due to this positive reception, we will continue with an annual presentation. The event will provide an opportunity for everyone to learn about one of the oldest Brazilian musical genres, the Choro and the Brazilian Jazz.

Vinicius Cantuaria sings Jobim and João

Jazz Standard - 116 E 27th St. New York, NY 10016

Brazilian singer, songwriter and guitarist Vinicius Cantuária, now in the fifth decade of his professional career, is revered for his deeply personal adaptation of the bossa nova, integrating this classically Brazilian form with jazz, avant–garde and pop. On his 2015 album Vinicius Canta Antonio Carlos Jobim, the artist performed songs from the catalog of the iconic composer including such lesser– known gems as “Caminhos Cruzados” and “Por Causa de Voce,” which Jobim composed in the late 1950s before the bossa nova craze hit the U.S. This week, Vinicius Cantuária revisits the songs of two Brazilian masters, Jobim and João Gilberto – don’t miss him! “Vinicius Cantuária is the doyen of Brazilian singer–songwriters – more melodic than Caetano Veloso, more consistent than Gilberto Gil, and with more talent than Max de Castro, Otto and Patricia Marx put together. If more people covered his songs, we’d be talking about him as the new Tom Jobim.” (John L. Walters, The Guardian, 1.29.2014)

Continuing investigations and the after-shocks of Lava Jato are impacting corporate behavior, prosecutorial actions, and investor concerns. Invigorated use of anti-money laundering and asset forfeiture laws, plea bargaining and leniency agreements, and coordinated cross-border enforcement, have heightened extraterritorial risks for Brazilian corporations and individuals.

Join us for a panel discussion that will update Lava Jato related developments, highlight recent innovations in prosecuting white collar crime, and evaluate applicable legal defenses. The panel will also discuss the evolution of corporate compliance programs in Brazil, and best practices to protect against unlawful behavior.

All On The Line

We made a bold decision to release our strategy memo this week. If you read our campaign director's email, you know the three key pillars to the success of this movement: training and educating, grassroots organizing, and local advocacy.

But like President Obama said, there's no one-size-fits-all solution to map manipulation -- because the fight for fair maps will be won at the state level. That's why we've built custom plans for each of our ten target states.

Our team set an end-of-month goal of $100,000 to fund our work on the ground. We are currently $35,280 away from hitting that goal -- and we have until midnight to close the funding gap. Can we count on your support?

As we finalize our state plans, we're evaluating whether we can execute these ambitious plans in full or need to modify plans because of budget constraints. Every grassroots donation we get helps us put our strategy memo into action. In fact, we've already trained hundreds of volunteers across the country and activated folks in states like Texas and North Carolina where the fight for fair maps has already begun -- thanks to the support of our grassroots donors.

Your donation of $15 could mean the difference between hitting our goal tonight or falling short. Will you be one of the people from New York to step up and help fund this important work?

President Obama said the single most important thing we can do at the grassroots level is to make sure the rules of the road are fair -- and our strategy memo outlines our plan to make that happen. We truly believe this grassroots movement can end gerrymandering, but we need the financial support to turn our plans into action.

Thanks for your support,
-- The All On The Line Team

All On The Line

Last month, President Obama wrote to you to say "All On The Line has proven that its campaign works." He was talking about our unprecedented campaign to demand openness and transparency during North Carolina's court-ordered redistricting process -- work that was only possible because of the support of our grassroots funders.

We set a goal of recruiting 1,000 State Plan Sponsors, to bring our 10 state plans to life. These plans were carefully crafted by our state directors to make the type of work we did in North Carolina possible across the country.

But here's the tough truth: We fell short of our goal. We received 896 contributions since launching our State Plan Sponsor campaign -- and our team has decided to extend our deadline to close the gap.

Will you be one of the contributors we need from New York to help us make up the difference and reach our 1,000 State Plan Sponsor goal?

If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately.

Thanks to support from our donors, the All On The Line team is heading to Texas to close out our Redistricting U program. We've already trained hundreds of volunteers -- a great start to building out our infrastructure in our 10 target states. But Redistricting U is just one piece of the puzzle -- to win fair maps in all of our target states, we need more resources to execute our state plans.

As President Obama said, "progress requires us to be vigilant to keep up the momentum." Vigilance means we don't give up when we miss our goals -- we get up and we try again.

Help us make our state plans a success by becoming a State Plan Sponsor.
