Tribute to George P. Shultz

(December 13, 1920 – February 6, 2021)

1983 Person of the Year

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce, we regretfully inform you of the passing, on February 6, 2021 at the age of 100, of George Shultz, economist, statesman, businessman, and 1983 Person of the Year American honoree.  A keen intellect and insightful leader, Shultz served in various positions under three Republican presidents and played a major role in shaping foreign policy under the Reagan administration, bringing an end to the Cold War.  His dialogue with the Chamber strengthened ties between Brazil and the United States and furthered our mission of promoting trade and investment between the two nations.

Born in New York City, Shultz graduated from Princeton University and served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II.  He earned a Ph.D. in Industrial Economics from MIT and subsequently taught at MIT (1948-57) and served as Dean of the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.

Amidst his extensive and successful career in government, in 1974 Shultz accepted a position at Bechtel, an engineering, construction, and project management company, eventually becoming President & Director.  Through Bechtel, with an active presence in Brazil, Shultz developed many friendships with Brazilians, which undoubtedly contributed to the advancement of relations between Brazil and the United States.  He accompanied President Reagan on an official visit to Brazil in 1982 and met with President José Sarney and other senior officials in Rio de Janeiro and Brasília in 1988.

Shultz was predeceased by his former wife and mother of his five children, Helena Maria O'Brien.  He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Mailliard Swig; his children, Margaret Ann Tilsworth, Kathleen Pratt Shultz Jorgensen, Peter Milton Shultz, Barbara Lennox Shultz White, and Alexander George Shultz; 11 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

More information on George Shultz’s great life and career can be found here:

Batalha da Aldeia fosters Brazilian culture through rhyme.

BOB 13 and GZ are founders of Batalha da Aldeia

Batalha da Aldeia is a collective founded in 2016 that hosts cultural circles and hip-hop events in the West Zone of São Paulo. Thus, uniting work and technology, BDA created communication channels, making responsible for the revelations of great names of the National RAP through the rhymes. Therefore, today it is a national reference in organizing MC battles.

Likewise, the project “Batalha da Aldeia for the Brasil” consists of fostering the culture of the Brazilian peripheries through rhyme disputes. In other words, what promotes multi-regional interaction and encourages the enrichment of young people's vocabulary.

The official YouTube channel, Batalha da Aldeia reached an impressive 520 million hits in the last three years. For this reason, the event has become one of the biggest cultural phenomena. That is, being the first independent Hip Hop battle in the country to reach the mark of 3 million subscribers on YouTube. As well as, having a strong presence on social media worldwide, with 25 million monthly reactions.

The BDA just turned 4 years old, the celebration party was entitled to an epic battle of 8 trios with heavy Mcs from all over Brazil, battle of 3 × 3 Bboys, Salvador Shows, Choice, Aldeia Records and Krawk. It is worth remembering that the event had 40% of the capacity of people for better comfort and health for our public and employees.
