President José Sarney and Ambassador Alves de Souza

Tribute to H.E. Ambassador Carlos Eduardo Alves de Souza

(September 21, 1933 – August 26, 2021)

On behalf of the Board of Directors of The Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce, we regretfully inform you of the passing, on August 26, 2021, of Ambassador Carlos Eduardo Alves de Souza.

Ambassador Alves de Souza was born on September 21, 1933, to Wladimir Alves de Souza and Maria Adélia in Rio de Janeiro.

His diplomatic career spanned more than 40 years and many different countries. He served as Ambassador of Brazil to the Czech Republic, Paraguay, and Switzerland. He also held several senior positions in Brasília, including the Office of the President in 1985. Ambassador Alves de Souza served as Consul General of Brazil in New York between 1981 and 1984. His interaction with the Chamber strengthened ties between Brazil and the United States and furthered the Chamber’s mission of promoting trade and investment between the two nations. He retired in 2001 to Rio de Janeiro and focused on his family, friends, golf, and his beloved soccer team, Flamengo.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Ambassador Carlos Eduardo Alves de Souza as we mourn his passing.

Meet our team and community.

Say you live in a state like North Carolina or Texas, where recent population growth is driven largely by an influx of people of color and Democrats. It's time for a once-in-a-decade reworking of district maps -- but instead of drawing maps to empower the communities that have driven the growth, Republicans draw the maps to give themselves more political power instead.

That's exactly what could happen if you don't fight back right now.

NBC News recently ran a headline that said: NBC:Gerrymandering could limit minority voters' power even though Census shows population gains

In Texas, people of color, who tend to vote for Democrats, make up 95% of the population growth recorded in the 2020 Census. NDRC President Kelly Burton plainly told Axios that “There’s simply no way for them to add two more GOP [House] seats in Texas without racially gerrymandering based on this census data.”

And North Carolina, which is gaining a House seat because more people of color -- who, again, tend to vote for Democrats -- have moved to the state, could actually lose Democratic representation if Republicans have their way.

Gerrymandering silences the voices of communities of color. It's a form of voter suppression. And we must END it.

It won't be easy to stop Republicans in states like North Carolina and Texas who want to manipulate the maps for their benefit. But we have to fight with everything we've got. Can you chip in to help us take on Republican power-stealers across the country?

It won't be the BR DAY NY we wanted. It will be our meeting, like remembering is living!!! One heats up for 2022, so that our LITTLE BRAZIL doesn't spend another year without the music and the joyful presence of our community that has always made BR DAY NY the biggest Brazilian event, outside Brazil, in the world. On September 5th we will celebrate life, Brazil and friendship in a very unique way.

The Coronavirus Pandemic prevented us from holding the 2020 event. However, uncertainties related to new variants, and the impact of bringing about 2 million people together in the same space, prevented us from carrying forward planning for 2021. But , we miss you very much. We want to see you, hear from you, find out how you are! And, as BR DAY NY is music, show, joy, Brazilian cuisine and the place for the community to have a party, we are organizing a much smaller event, but with all the dedication and affection.

In music we won't have any attractions from Brazil. The attraction will be you!! Like this? Easy, very easy! Bands, groups, singers and music schools that have experience, that can prove their performance at other events and that wish to perform at BR DAY NY must register by the 31st of August via email - info@brazilianday.com, with all information. The venue for performances will be on 6th Avenue between 45th & 46th Streets, from 1:30pm to 6:00pm. So, if you want to introduce yourself, hurry and make your registration, as places are limited and participations are subject to evaluation by the direction of the event!

As always, we will have Brazilian stalls with empadinhas, pastries, coxinhas, baião de 2, pamonha, guava with cheese, in short, dishes and juices that will represent our entire gastronomy, our cuisine. For you to have your tent at this party, call 212-809-4900.

We will have a meeting of ours, very close, for everyone to interact. This year we will not have the VIP area, we will all be together and mixed in the same space. Wear the yellow green! Let's celebrate life and Brazil together! I hope you guys!

ALL WITH MASKS! ONE PROTECTING THE OTHER! THIS WILL BE BEAUTIFUL!
