The Brazil Brown Bag Seminar Series invites you to its discussion titled, “Social Policies carried out by the Partido dos Trabalhadores governments of Dilma and Lula: Limits versus Propaganda” with Valéria Nader of Sociedade para o Progresso da Comunicação Democrática – SPPCD (Correio da Cidadania) – Brasil.Social Policies carried out by different governments have been a central theme of political and economic debate in Brazil, and have also been object of very diverging academic studies. The issue reaches special relevance at this moment in Brazil, as the proposed cut-costing measures, if approved, will have a direct and profound impact on social areas and programs. PT governments made great efforts to create an aura of being socially responsible, and a sort of “government brand” that sent the fallacious message of focus and priority on social security initiatives, with a major focus on Bolsa Família. The presentation will highlight the political marketing built around the idea of governments that focused on the redemption of Brazil’s social inequality in parallel of its economic development, what was implemented with very significant expenditures with mainstream media and coordinated initiatives of an aligned network of websites, blogs and virtual media outfits, supported by social movements associated with PT Party since its foundation.Valéria Nader’s academic background includes a Major and a Masters Degree in Economics. As a professional, for the last 25 years she’s gathered numerous experiences in dealing with people of different backgrounds, political and academic viewpoints and of a broad range of organizations, including private, public and non-profit. This practical knowledge makes her comfortable when dealing with situations and working with people of diverse backgrounds.Currently, she serves as the Editor-in chief of Correio da Cidadania, one of the leading and longest-lasting independent newspapers in Brazil, focused in economic, political, social and cultural analysis. Originally printed and distributed to subscribers, the newspaper is currently edited for the web, with free access. It belongs to the non-profit organization SPPCP –Sociedade Para o Progresso da Comunicação Democrática- and is supported by it and by individual contributors.
