Exhibition  "The Mirror", by Bruno Dunley
JAN 17 - MAR 1

Opening: Jan 16 @ 6:00 PM
Galery Nara Roesler
Galeria Nara Roesler | New York is pleased to present The Mirror, Bruno Dunley's U.S, solo debut. The exhibition includes a selection of works developed during the artist's 2016 residency, Further on Air, in East Hampton. The works engage with the history of painting, as well as the rich art historical legacy of the East End, where the region's specific light and landscape became an inspiration for Pollock, Kline and de Kooning in the 1940s and 50s. A new monographic publication on the past decade of Dunley's production will launch on the occasion of the exhibition.
Dunley's work questions the specificity of painting, particularly in relation to representation and materiality. His canvases depart from carefully constructed compositions, gradually undergoing corrections and alterations which, at times, reveal the gaps in the apparent continuity of perception.

One of the nominees for the 2012 edition of the Pipa Prize, Dunley (b. 1984) has featured in several solo exhibitions including: Ruído (Galeria Nara Roesler, São Paulo 2016); Bruno Dunley (11 Bis, Paris, France, 2012); as well as group shows including: A luz que vela o corpo é a mesma que revela a tela (CAIXA Cultural, Rio de Janeiro, 2017); 9999 (The Fireplace Project, East Hampton, New York 2017) and A Bela e a Fera (Galeria Central, São Paulo, 2017). Alongside Marina Rheingantz and Lucas Arruda, Dunley's works are part of important institutional collections in Brazil, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo, Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, and the Instituto Figueiredo Ferraz.

January 10-14, 2018 at LOS ANGELES
CONVENTION CENTER

galerie bruno massa is pleased to announce its third participation in the 24h edition of LA ART SHOW. Los Angeles has emerged as a global epicenter of art & culture, with a distinct, interwoven multi-cultural influence unique to the city. Diversity is our strength and art is most impactful when it includes or transcends all borders.  As LA rises as the world-class destination for art, the LA ART SHOW continues to lead the way with innovative programming and one-of-a-kind experiences for an expanding collecting audience.

For the second year the gallery spotlights Gilles Teboul in a solo project. The French artist furthers his gestureless experimentation of color on canvas by asserting a classic “acheiropoïetic” approach, i.e. poured on and “not made by the hand of man, miraculously.” Thus, in spite of their almost instantaneous conception, the works achieve a sublime depth and almost indescribable tonality.

Dende & Band plus Recycled Sounds : APAP Showcase

January 15 | Set Times: 7:30pm

Cover: $20 | Doors: 6pm

This evening feature two projects by master Afro-Brazilian percussionist Dendê Macêdo.
Dendê is a percussionist, singer, composer, bandleader, teacher, and multi-instrumentalist. He’s been a professional musician since the age of 14, when he appeared in the frontline of Timbalada, Carlinhos Brown’s superstar percussion ensemble. Since 2001, he’s been performing with his own groups, creating Afro-Brazilian funk, folklore and fusion.
Dendê & Band have cultivated a unique sound where Afro-Brazilian traditions like samba de roda and candomble have been seemlessly melded with world rhythms like rumba, afrobeat and mbalax. Dendê & Band have recently performed at venues such as the Glastonbury Festival in the UK, Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles; the KW Latinfest in Ontario, Canada; the Penang World Music Festival in Malaysia; Summerdance in Chicago and the Chile Pepper Fiesta at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.
Recycled Sounds is Dendê’s latest, solo project featuring his instruments made from found materials being performed to create Afro-Brazilian musical landscapes.

“The band grounds lighthearted melodies and reflective vocals in an expert amalgamation of Afro-Brazilian and Cuban rhythms.” -Flavorpill
“The sinuous jams of Dendê & Hãhãhães ought to delight fans of Afrobeat and psych-tinged funk.” – Time Out New York.

CINEMA
"In the Intense Now", by João Moreira Salles
JAN 31 - FEB  13
Film Forum

To be young was very heaven.” – William Wordsworth. IN THE INTENSE NOW immerses itself in the excitement and heady idealism of the ‘60s. Inspired by Chris Marker’s meditative essays on political radicalism, João Moreira Salles brilliantly collages archival materials from Paris ’68, Prague Spring (and the Soviet invasion), and the Chinese Cultural Revolution. He explores how the intensity of thinking one is revolutionizing the world can feel a lot like the ecstasy of falling in love. And when that moment fades, life’s quotidian realities can become a hard pill to swallow. This is a film that puts those profoundly significant events of 50 years ago into something like proportion. It’s a movie for everyone who ever marched for civil rights, shouted an anti-war slogan, or expected the women’s movement to usher in a brave new world.

REVIEWS

“A haunting record of history made poetic. Reminiscent of the films of Chris Marker...an immersive and highly personal film. Hypnotic in its provocation.”
