2017 was one hell of a year, right?
I was going to send out my usual tips, but sitting in my warm house (it’s sub-zero outside), with my cat curled up beside me, I’m in reflection mode and starting out the new year listening to my beacon: Brene Brown.
Here’s the quote that inspired me to write today:
" You can not take people professionally, where you are not willing to go personally...We are just one integrated person." - Brene Brown
It comes from this podcast, which I think every artist should listen to and talks about the integral relationship between creativity and being personal.
It’s a conversation happening through the lens of marketing which can feel deeply confronting for creatives and even Brene, a PHD who’s spent thousands of hours studying resilience and human nature, struggled deeply with her marketing and branding.
I love the parts about the messy middle where every artist must spend huge amounts of time as this is the creative process, and blending your creative life with your “other life,” a struggle we all face.
This was recorded a while back but it is still deeply relevant today, as so many women overcame shame and guilt to speak up in 2017.
I was trying to think of an actionable note to end this newsletter and in the spirit of getting personal here it is:
Over the years, Women in Music has become a special place I have gone to experience togetherness, share stories, and support, and I'm honored to be serving as an advisory board member.
If you have not heard of WIM, I deeply encourage you to check it out. It's not just for women we also welcome men and have many in the community.
Currently Women in Music represents over 4,000 women across 12 chapters and we are taking a stand in 2018 to move hard conversations forward that we face in the industry.
This is literally the best $50 you will spend. It will open you up to not only wonderful events in multiple cities around the world, but also to a built-in network where you can ask for anything you need, and it will remind you that you don't have to go it alone.
I do not get a toaster or a kickback for sharing this. I do get the deep satisfaction of inviting you to a community where you can connect, share, promote, and find allies, who will be at your fingertips in the new year.
Here's to more togetherness, more love, and to taking better care of one another in our industry in 2018.
