Tribute to Erling Sven Lorentzen

(January 28, 1923 – March 9, 2021)

1993 Person of the Year

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce, we regretfully inform you of the passing, on March 9, 2021 at the age of 98, of Erling Sven Lorentzen, Norwegian-Brazilian shipowner and industrialist, Founder of Aracruz Celulose, and 1993 Brazilian Person of the Year honoree. Mr. Lorentzen was a longtime Chamber affiliate and supporter, and his dialogue with the Chamber strengthened ties between Brazil and the United States and furthered our mission of promoting trade and investment between the two nations.

Mr. Lorentzen was born in Oslo, Norway and worked for the Norwegian Independent Company 1, a British military unit, during World War II. His family business was a merchant marine, with a line from the Gulf of Mexico to the east coast of Brazil and Argentina. In the early 1950s, Mr. Lorentzen bought Esso’s gas distribution company in Brazil, expanding the transportation of liquefied petroleum gas transportation, and moved to Brazil permanently. In 1972, he sold the company and established Aracruz Celulose, a Brazilian pulp and paper manufacturer, which he sold in 2008 for US$1.7 billion.

Mr. Lorentzen was predeceased by his wife, Princess Ragnhild (eldest child of King Olav V of Norway), with whom he had three children – Haakon, Ingeborg, and Ragnhild.
