All On The Line

One year ago today, the House passed the For the People Act. This bill would expand Americans' access to the ballot box and reduce the influence of big money in politics -- essentially putting power back into the hands of voters. But Mitch McConnell has blocked the bill from advancing any further.

Passing this bill would be game-changing for so many reasons, including helping our effort to protect district maps across the country from being manipulated. The bill calls for each state to establish an independent redistricting commission -- it would be a huge victory for fair maps before redistricting begins next year.

But the Senate still refuses to pass the bill because folks like McConnell believe it would threaten his party's power up and down the ballot.

If you believe power should be in the hands of the people and not politicians, sign our petition to show your support for this democracy bill.

Marginalized communities continue to experience the negative impacts of gerrymandering while special interests reap the benefits. So it's no surprise conservatives like Mitch McConnell won't act on this bill -- those special interests are funding his campaigns and calling the shots.

It's been a full year since the house passed the For the People Act and unless we break through the conservative obstruction, the Senate will continue to block it. Add your name to support the For the People Act.

Thank you for helping to fight for fair maps,

President Obama: With maps that deliver on the promise of equal representation, our political leaders will be forced to actually prioritize the will and well-being of the American people on the most pressing issues of our time. Donate for fair maps >>>

Sula -- As if you needed more proof: Gerrymandering is terrible for progressive policy change.
➔ Two-thirds of Americans say that the U.S. government isn’t doing enough to address climate change. But GOP politicians in safe districts won’t even acknowledge the basic science!

➔ Despite voter support for expanding Medicaid, Republicans in gerrymandered states like North Carolina, Georgia, and Wisconsin have refused -- putting their constituents’ health and lives at risk.

➔ Even though 97 percent of voters support universal background checks, 95 percent of Republican House members voted against the Bipartisan Background Checks Act in 2019.
The only way we can fix this broken system and pass the policies Americans want and need is by ending gerrymandering. Will you chip in to support our work?

With redistricting slated to begin in 2021, the threat of gerrymandering is looming -- and we'll feel the impacts in every election for the next decade. It's time to take a stand before our district maps -- and elections! -- are rigged by special interests and partisanship again.

One solution to achieve the change we seek is through nonpartisan, independent redistricting commissions. When done thoughtfully, these bodies can strip politicians of their ability to manipulate the process and set the stage for fair redistricting.

Demand independent nonpartisan redistricting commissions to help prevent rigged district maps!

Several states have implemented independent commissions -- a huge step toward fair maps. But we have a long fight ahead of us.

We must protect commissions where they exist, strengthen reform that is under consideration, and build public support where reform has yet to blossom.

Add your name to this petition if you want to end gerrymandering. We need to show a groundswell of support nationwide.

Thanks for your support,

State Senate Approves [Arizona] Redistricting Rules
Over Democratic Objections
The Associated Press, February 25

We can never take our eyes off of map manipulators, Sula. As we learned these past few weeks in Arizona -- even when fair map advocates achieve redistricting reform, there will always be power-hungry politicians looking to claw back control of the process.

But we're fighting back. Arizona has one of the strongest independent redistricting commissions in the country. That's exactly why we launched digital ads immediately after the State Senate voted to advance a law that would limit the commission's ability to protect the voting power of communities of color. Check them out:

As a State Director, I'm grateful and excited that we've been able to mobilize folks right here in the Grand Canyon State. But the reality is, in 2021, redistricting will be happening across the country and we'll have to be prepared to launch campaigns to activate citizens on multiple fronts. It takes a lot of work to run these campaigns. For this campaign, we had to design the graphics, had to build the call script on our tool, and had to make sure the ads got in front of the right constituents who would make the call.

President Obama told you last month that "We're leaning on the generosity of grassroots donors." It's the only way our plans can work and we can keep map manipulators from defining our politics for another ten years.

Can you pitch in to fund our work?

Thanks for all you do,

Kendra Alvarez

Last week, we came together for a team retreat. While it was incredible to see each other in person, what we realized as we went deep on our state strategies and calendars is that we're going to need everyone's help to be successful.

Here are just a few takeaways we want you to know:

Three key takeaways:

-- In some states with redistricting commissions, we need to start mobilizing folks now to apply. For example, the application process in Colorado starts this summer!
-- During the height of redistricting in 2021, many of our target states will need volunteers to ensure accountability during legislative hearings -- some could happen as early as February.
-- In some states, like in Wisconsin, the fight for fair maps might continue into 2022.

In short, this will be a long, sustained fight in multiple states across the country. We need to make sure our states have everything they need to be successful -- materials for Redistricting U, placards and Citizen Commitment cards, toolkits for making calls to elected officials, a budget, and a plan for rapid response... the list goes on.

Every dollar we raise helps us get closer to ending gerrymandering. Will you donate to our Grassroots Advocacy Fund?

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is central to the legacy of the civil rights movement, and for years it protected voters from having their rights diminished. But today the right to vote is under attack in a way that we have not seen in decades.

Here's the latest: some people in Texas reportedly had to wait up to seven hours to vote on Super Tuesday. That is abhorrent and unacceptable. You can draw a direct line from the wait times last week to two events over the past decade: gerrymandering that locked conservatives into illegitimate power and the Supreme Court's decision to dismantle a key provision of the Voting Rights Act in 2013.

We must fight and win to hold politicians responsible for these discriminatory tactics. This fight is core to the values of All On The Line -- we must return power to the people. If you're with me, let's rally a massive grassroots response. Your contributions will go directly toward our work to amplify the voices of citizens.

In the last redistricting cycle, the Texas legislature aggressively gerrymandered so that the state's politicians could choose their voters and lock in their own power. And in 2013, the state's legislature was freed up to impose any discriminatory voting tactics it wanted after the Supreme Court blocked the federal government's ability to preemptively stop voter suppression measures. By 2018, the state's gerrymandered legislature had closed roughly 750 polling places -- more than any other state.

It is this systemic protection of ill-begotten power -- and the desire to protect that power at all cost -- that we must fight. And the only remedy is a chorus of citizens calling for change.

Join us. We're creating the technology, hiring the staff, and building the infrastructure to win. But we can't do it without the generous support of our online donors. Pitch in so we don't fall behind on our plans.

We’re already a third of the way through the month.

Here’s the good news: We’ve made our first three political investments this year and we’re seeing great Democratic voter turnout in presidential primaries across the country.

Here’s the tough news: We need to pick up our fundraising pace if we’re going to turn out all of these voters for down-ballot races in November so we can defeat map-rigging Republicans.

To get back on track, we need to raise another $5,000 by midnight tonight. Will you make a donation right now to fight for a decade of fair maps? Give at this secure link to make sure your donation counts toward our goal: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/ndrc-midmarch/sula_costa@yahoo.com

Thanks for being a part of this fight,
Ben

Vox:
“It looks like Trump is trying to trick people into filling out “census” forms online”

Sula -- Trump cronies have found yet another scheme to manipulate redistricting:
➢ The RNC is sending out political mailers that look like official census documents. (The state of Montana even warned voters about the scam.)

➢ The Trump campaign ran deceptive Facebook ads to trick people into filling out fake “census” forms.
We’re going to have to fight harder than ever to ensure fairness in the face of these shady practices. Can you pitch in to help?

Let’s review all the ways Trump and Republicans have attempted to manipulate the 2020 Census in order to supercharge their gerrymandering:
➢ They tried to add a discriminatory citizenship question to depress census participation among immigrant communities and communities of color. If they’d been successful, Republicans would have gotten more seats than they were due in Congress and state legislatures.

➢ When the Supreme Court shot down their plan, they started compiling other types of data to try to diminish minority voices during redistricting.

➢ And now they’re using misleading mailers and online ads that look like official census documents which could depress census participation.
There’s no limit to how low they’re willing to stoop, Sula. But we’re committed to fighting them tooth and nail until we achieve a fair census and fair elections.

Time is running out before voters go to the polls for the last time before redistricting. Will you rush a donation NOW?
