Sula -- The GOP has used a number of tricks to justify their map manipulation. Now CNN reports that Republicans in many states are claiming that "racial data played no role as they drew the maps for the next 10 years." As if we’re to believe it’s just a coincidence that their maps happen to diminish the power of communities of color!

CNN: 'They know where Black voters live': Challengers say 'race blind' redistricting maps are anything but

We know the truth: Republican gerrymandering is intended to weaken the political power of Black and brown people, who tend to vote Democratic. Just look at this headline from The New York Times:

NYT: 'Map by map, GOP chips away at Black Democrats' power

And this is why the struggle against gerrymandering is a civil rights struggle, Sula. But the NDRC has no intention of allowing Republicans to get away with this. We're fighting them in the states, we're uplifting the voices of communities of color in redistricting, and our affiliates are supporting voters in lawsuits against rigged maps.

But how much we can do depends on you. Rush a donation NOW to help us win this fight >>>

We have GREAT news for you today -- after years of work, Michigan is getting fair maps! Check out what President Obama tweeted about it:

Tweet from President Obama that reads: If you're feeling discouraged about our democracy, read this article about how citizens in Michigan took politics out of the redistricting process. It’s why the work @EricHolder and the
@DemRedistrict are doing to fight gerrymandering is so important.

His words are spot-on, Sula. This wouldn't have happened without regular people seeing a change that needed to be made, getting engaged, and being persistent. And it's exactly the kind of effort the NDRC is supporting all over the country. Will you make a quick donation to help fund our work?

The NDRC proudly supported the formation of the independent redistricting commission that drew Michigan's maps. In the past few months we've seen repeatedly that truly independent processes result in fairness -- and as A.G. Holder said, "where Democrats can compete in a fair system, they can win."

But many challenges remain, as in the case of Arizona’s commission, where a biased process resulted in skewed maps. That's why it's critical that we keep fighting across the country to prevent Republican gerrymandering and support voters in lawsuits when necessary.

Will you help us fund this work? Let's go out and win more victories in 2022!

Thanks,
Team NDRC

Sula,

Since our launch in 2017, the team here at the NDRC -- fueled by donations from supporters like you -- has been working tirelessly to protect our democracy. And the good news is that during phase 1 of our long-term plan, we made some BIG headway in the fight for fair maps:

  • We helped flip 10 governor’s offices to blue.
  • We helped break nine Republican trifectas in state governments.
  • We mobilized our community to help pass bipartisan redistricting reform in 5 states.

But believe us when we say NONE of those accomplishments would have been possible without your support. And the fight isn’t over yet, which is why we need you to pitch in anything you can today to help us keep pushing for fair maps and voting rights in 2022!

Because despite all the progress we’ve made, there’s still a ton of work left to do to defend our democracy. Now that we’re in phase 2 of our plan, we’re working every single day to:

  • Fight back against GOP voter suppression in the states.
  • Boost federal redistricting and voting rights reforms in Congress.
  • Support voters in lawsuits when necessary.
  • Win FAIR maps in the states that have yet to adopt new ones.
PITCH IN TO HELP
US KEEP FIGHTING!

We still have an opportunity to make a lasting impact on the maps that will govern our elections for the next 10 years, but we can’t do it without your help every step of the way. That means you have two choices: Either pitch in now to help us keep doing everything we can to protect fair maps, or sit on the sidelines and hope somebody else will instead.

Please, choose option one and make a donation today to help us win the fight for fair maps and protect our democracy:

The good news:
Washington Post: Surprisingly, there has been a redistricting turnaround. The New York Times: Ungerrymandered: Michigan’s Maps, Independently Drawn, Set Up Fair Fight.
The bad news:
Tennessean: House redistricting to eliminate five Democratic incumbents in urban Tennessee. Brennan Center for Justice: This year’s tidal wave of restrictive voting legislation will continue in 2022.
So will the news be good or bad in 2022?
That's up to us, Sula.
Chip in to help the NDRC: Keep fighting gerrymandering. Support voters in lawsuits to fight for fair maps. Boost federal voting rights legislation
