With summer in full swing, it’s more important than ever to remember and honor our troops who are facing extreme temperatures, sacrificing this time with their families to protect us and our nation.

We thank you for helping our service members during times like these. Below, you’ll find updates on all the work your support helped make possible in the last few weeks.

Reuniting military families

A Military Family Reunites With Their Sailor After Deployment on the USS George H.W. Bush
This April, hundreds of military families eagerly awaited the return of their loved ones after spending nearly nine months at sea. For one family, this was a truly special moment.

Click here to read about this heartwarming moment and all the work the USO does to ensure families can stay connected for long periods of time apart. »

New USO Center

Sailors Aboard the USS George H.W. Bush Have a New USO Center To Call Their Own
U.S. Navy sailors spend long periods of time in a relatively small space — a floating structural steel vessel with very few port visits. This can be extremely isolating and stressful. That’s why, with your support, the USO opened the doors to the first aircraft carrier-based USO center on June 6, 2023.

Gratitude is at the beach! A huge thank you to our amazing volunteers and sponsor, Raytheon Technologies (“RTX"), who joined 47 service members, their families and USO staff at Kin Beach for our monthly beach cleanup event. Together, we filled over 40 bags with trash and made a difference in caring for Okinawa’s beautiful beaches! We extend our appreciation to RTX for its support in making events like this possible.

VOICE OF THE USO

"When I was coming out of my National Training Center rotation in California, USO volunteers were there to give us goodie bags and coffee. It made us very happy because we hadn’t had real food in 30-plus days, so they were amazing."

Our Republican counterparts released a memo detailing their plan for a far-right takeover in Virginia.

The GOP is dead set on helping Virginia Republicans clutch onto their razor-thin majority in the House of Delegates and chip away at our Senate majority.

  • They’re partnering with far-right Gov. Glenn Youngkin to push an ultra-conservative agenda on the Commonwealth – banning abortion, restricting voting laws, and pushing for anti-LGBTQ+ policies.
  • They’re intensifying their spending – Republicans poured $750,000 into Gov. Youngkin’s PAC, Youngkin ended last quarter with over $6 million cash on handand Virginia Republicans have spent six figures on attack ads in 12 key swing districts.
  • And, they’re spewing lies about Democrats’ stance on crime, education, and the economy. We need to set the record straight.

We can’t sit idly by while Republicans forge a path to power. With less than 100 days until Election Day, we can’t take our foot off the gas. Chip in $7 ahead of this year’s elections in Virginia.

Here’s the thing: Republicans are hurling baseless accusations against Democrats, so their messaging won’t carry them far.

BUT: MAGA millionaires are fired up and doubling down on their financial support of an extreme right-wing agenda.

If we gather enough support between now and Election Day, we stand a fighting chance at flipping the Virginia House and defending our Senate majority – but this won’t be easy, and we’re running out of time.

Before Republicans spend one more dollar in Virginia, can we count on you to rush $7 or more to secure victories for state Democrats in Virginia and beyond?

Together in this fight,

Team DLCC

Some of the most important special elections of 2023 are right around the corner. Here's what you need to know 👉

➡️ In two days, Reps. Jones and Pearson of the Tennessee Three are facing a special election to reclaim their seats after being expelled by their Republican colleagues earlier this year.

➡️ In New Hampshire, Democrats are FOUR seats away from FLIPPING the House, but that means defending every seat in this year’s upcoming special elections.

➡️ In the Pennsylvania House, Democrats and Republicans are TIED – next month’s special election will be majority-defining.

In the final days and weeks before must-win races like these, grassroots donations play a critical role in fueling our on-the-ground work to reach every voter. Can we count on you to help power state Dems to victory? 💪

Republicans are doing everything in their power to stall our progress, push their far-right agenda, and sabotage President Biden’s electoral path to victory in 2024.

Grassroots donations are making a huge difference for state Democrats. In fact, we’ve already won 19 special elections this year! With just two days before polls close in our next special election, we’re coming to you directly:

We don’t need to tell you how much is at stake in 2024.

We’ve seen just how much havoc the extreme Republicans in Congress have caused with their razor-thin majority in the House.

Last year, we saw a 10% drop in Black voter turnout in the midterms compared to 2018.

And with the GOP working overtime to restrict voting rights across the country and deny voters the right to elect their representatives, it’s more important than ever that we make sure our top supporters are getting out to vote!

Can you take a few minutes to answer a quick survey?

DO YOU PLAN TO VOTE IN 2024?
YES!NO

Thanks for your input,

Tribute to Lee M. Elman
(June 6, 1936 - November 27, 2022)

The Board of Directors of the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce is deeply saddened to learn of the passing, on November 27, 2022 at the age of 86, of Lee Elman, longtime Chamber member and supporter and an active participant in our activities.  Mr. Elman was a dedicated member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors and also served on our Trade & Business Investment Committee.

Born on June 6, 1936 in Mount Kisco, NY, Mr. Elman graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University.  He went on to become a Fulbright scholar at the University of Bologna before earning two degrees from Yale Law School.

In 1979, Mr. Elman founded real estate investment firm Elman Investors Inc., which purchased government-occupied property.  His business successes allowed him to be a generous and passionate patron of the arts, including theater and music.  He cofounded the Aston Magna Music Festival, now in its 50th year; volunteered as Cultural Affairs Commissioner for New York City under Mayors Abe Beame and Ed Koch; and, for 22 years, was a member of the New York State Council of the Arts.

Mr. Elman is survived by his longtime companion, Judy Ney; his daughter, Alexandra Foley; his cousin, Esther Schwartz; and many devoted friends.  His steadfast commitment and contributions to the Chamber strengthened ties between Brazil and the United States and furthered our mission of promoting trade and investment between the two nations.  His presence and company will be missed.
