DREX, Brazil’s Central Bank Digital Currency:
Specifications, Benefits, and Risks

Tuesday, October 24, 2023
9:00 to 10:30 a.m.
(Eastern Time - U.S. and Canada)

Brazil is set to be among the pioneering nations to introduce a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), specifically the Digital Real (DREX). Slated for adoption in 2024, DREX will serve as a comprehensive replacement for the traditional real and will be widely accessible to the public.
Brazilian consumers and businesses have long been accustomed to digital transactions facilitated by bank accounts, online transactions, and payment apps, like the popular PIX platform, which is overseen by the Central Bank of Brazil. However, these forms of money are liabilities of private entities such as commercial banks and fintechs. In contrast, DREX will be a liability of the Central Bank, making it the safest digital asset available with no associated credit or liquidity risk.
DREX could also provide more information than the simple face-value of the real in either physical or digital form. For instance, in a car purchase, both the money and title can be attached to the transaction along with tax compliance using DREX. This ensures that the transaction only concludes at the Central Bank when all conditions have been met (i.e., digitally approved), allowing for the simultaneous transfer of money, property, titles, and taxes.
The introduction of DREX has the potential to significantly reduce transaction costs and expand access to complex transactions for products, real estate, and services. This could lead to a revolution in financial services and democratize access to finance. However, it could also lead to disintermediation from banking services and a significant loss of traditional bank deposits, affecting credit funding.
Once implemented, DREX will likely become the standard form of reserves held at the Central Bank and the sole means of exchange within all parts of the financial system, including the monetary authority. As DREX operates on blockchain technology, it would enhance transaction security within the financial system through real-time and secure clearing. However, it could also affect monetary policy and the effectiveness of policy rates set through interventions in government debt markets.
To discuss these matters and more, the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce has assembled an outstanding panel of experts, including DREX’s creators, implementers, and key analysts, who will assess its potential impacts.

If you want to help The Collective PAC build Black political power up and down the ballot, and across the country, then you’re in the right place. If you'd like to unsubscribe click here.

When Colin ran for Congress in 2018, the odds were stacked against him.

His opponent was a Republican Congressman who had held his seat for 11 terms. Colin and our team put everything we had into the campaign – but just 48 days from the election, the polls gave Colin a 10% chance of winning, and the district was leaning Republican.

In the last days of the campaign, Colin worked day and night to connect with Texans and earn their votes. He slowly chipped away at his opponent's lead as voters got to know him.

By Election Day, he had a 37% chance of victory. And when the numbers finally came in, he won with 52% of the vote.

Split a donation between The Collective PAC and Colin Allred to defeat Ted Cruz →

This time around we're facing an even bigger opponent: Ted Cruz. But we're starting this race with much better odds. Polls show Colin just 5 points down with 14% of voters undecided.

What's more, Ted Cruz only won reelection by 2.6% last time.

We have a clear path to victory, and all it's going to take is connecting with enough undecided voters. That's why Colin is on the road traveling to every corner of Texas, shaking every hand he can and listening to what voters have to say.

But voter outreach on this massive scale is expensive. That's why Colin's counting on grassroots supporters like you to help him do it, so please: Can you split a donation of $10 between Colin and The Collective PAC before our midnight fundraising deadline to help us reach the undecided voters we need to fire Ted Cruz? →

If you've stored your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will be processed immediately and split between Colin Allred and The Collective PAC.
