Dear Sula,
This month, two authors, a classical musician, and a video store owner are among the seventh cohort of media trailblazers for our Entrepreneurial Journalism Creators Program! We are so proud to welcome this group of 23 journalism entrepreneurs to the program.
EJCP has given rising stars from around the globe the time and support to embolden their various products and ventures. These media leaders will spend 100 days developing their skills and knowledge to strengthen and grow their niche ventures.
Classes kicked off this week with onboarding, and a provocative session with Jeff Jarvis. It has been so meaningful to be able to facilitate community for those who likely don’t have otherwise, and we’re looking forward to seeing how much progress they will make in these 100 days!
In other news this month: we’re coming up on the deadline for our News Product Management Certification (NPMC) –– a program with our partners at the News Product Alliance, designed to teach you how to implement product development methodologies and develop your personal leadership style. Be sure to get your application by November 3rd! Also note that employers can sponsor reserved spots in the program.
Read on for spotlights on what our friends and colleagues are up to, upcoming events, and more!
Cheers, Marie Gilot Executive Director, J+ Newmark J-School |

The J+ Team placed 5th at the annual AAJA New York Trivia Cup 2023, beating The New York Times and Marie hasn’t stopped talking about it. Kyle and Divine saved the day with deep musical knowledge and the team discovered that they know more about architects than they thought. Back in Atlanta, Niketa was reading this article on how The Daily Maverick (an Exec alum!) is boosting readership through generative AI. |

| | | The results of this November's elections in Virginia will determine the path our country takes for years to come. That’s why Hillary Clinton is calling on grassroots Democrats, including you, to make a difference: Rush $7 to elect state Dems »Chip in a gift of $7 (THREE TIMES the impact!) to heed Hillary Clinton's call to action and support Democrats in critical states like Virginia. Every donation, no matter the amount, will make an incredible difference → For the past two years, our Democratic majority in the state Senate has acted as a barrier against Virginia Republicans' dangerous agenda. But we risk losing this essential check on GOP power if Democrats are defeated next month. Virginia Republicans have already rolled back voting rights, and their proposed budget favors tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy. If the GOP flips the state Senate and keeps control of the House, abortion rights could be first up on the chopping block. Their far-right governor has already endorsed plans to threaten abortion doctors with jail time – it's horrible. The stakes are high, and we cannot afford to lose. This team has stepped up time and time again to help drive our mission forward, so we know you'll come through this year, too. We can’t let Virginia become the next Republican-controlled state to restrict abortion rights. Will you rush 3X-matched gift of $7 now to stand with Hillary Clinton and build Democratic power in Virginia and beyond? If you've stored your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will process immediately. |

State Democrats have secured massive victories across the country this year. With the help of supporters like you, we gained seats in New Hampshire, defended our majority in the Pennsylvania House, and laid the groundwork for Democratic victories in battleground Virginia. And that’s only the beginning. The fight for our fundamental freedoms and against GOP extremism is just getting started. State Democrats are facing gerrymandered maps, abortion bans, and an all-important Election Day in just 14 days – the most impactful way you can help fuel our work is by becoming an official member of our movement. So, we’re calling on you to become a member for the first time and help keep up our momentum to fight in these critical races ahead. Will you chip in a 3X-matched gift of $10 before next Tuesday’s deadline to claim your 2024 membership?
If you've stored your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will process immediately. |

| | | Rise and shine, friend! | I’m up early sipping a cup of coffee, and it has me thinking back to some of the jobs I had long before I was elected to the U.S. Senate. When I was a waitress in college, I used to wake up at the crack of dawn to work the breakfast shift. | Breakfast is the hardest shift as a waitress because of two things: toast and coffee. You have to time the toast so it comes out with the breakfast – and you have to do that while also making sure everybody in the restaurant has enough coffee. Think that’s easy? Forget about it. | When I think about toast and coffee nowadays, it reminds me of where I came from and why I fight so hard for working families to this day. | Growing up, I worked a lot of different jobs – folding laundry at the dry cleaners, scooping ice cream, working in a research lab. I worked as a cocktail waitress at Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip and was a member of Culinary Workers Union Local 226. I did it all to make ends meet and become the first in my family to graduate college. Even after I started my career as a computer programmer, I took community college classes at night to get ahead and worked as a banquet waitress on the weekends to pay my bills. | Today, my job is serving Nevada in the U.S. Senate, and it is the honor of my life. And I’m especially proud to represent the union members and hardworking families who built our great state. | I will always remember my roots. That’s why I never let up in the fight to grow our middle class, create good-paying jobs, and lower everyday costs. But to keep up that fight, I need your help right now. | CNN is reporting that I'm one of the most vulnerable senators up for reelection, and recent polling shows me 2 points down in the race that experts predict is likely to decide Senate control. The only way I can keep Nevada blue is with your support. | Please, friend – will you chip in $5 or more now to help me win in battleground Nevada, defend the Senate for Democrats, and continue delivering progress for working families nationwide? | I'm so grateful to have you on my team.
Thank you,
Jacky |
