Working primarily in painting and drawing, Fernanda Mello reinterprets folkloric culture she learned as a child growing up in Brazil. A self-taught artist, Mello derives her artistic inspiration from her studies of South American tribes and shamans of the Amazon region. In Mirror’s Inhabitants, she catalogs the life of Davi Kopenawa, an important indigenous shaman from Brazil who advocated for rainforest conservation and indigenous rights in light of the arrival of gold miners and their diseases in his region.
Fernanda Mello has exhibited at Greenpoint Gallery, Brooklyn; the Fort Tilden National Recreation Area; the Regents Canal Festival and The Brick Lane Gallery, both in London; Grand Palais, Paris; Galeria Olho d’Agua, Brasilia; and FilaAC, São Paulo. She is the recipient of an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and currently resides in Brooklyn.
Curated by Jenny Gerow, Assistant Curator
Fernanda Mello is a 2017-18 recipient of the ArtFP, an open call for Brooklyn-based visual artists to exhibit at BRIC House. For more information, visit BRICartsmedia.org/ArtFP

Galeria Nara Roesler | New York presents Theory of Inevitable Convergence, a group show of the artists Artur Lescher, Carlito Carvalhosa and Marco Maggi. The show will highlight untapped convergence points between the narratives of the three artists. In addition to formal artistic intersections, the chosen works carry important questions the three artists have recurrently posed to the public such as the way in which their works relate to the surrounding space; be it through interference and disruption or suggesting an unknown place, linked or not the physical realm. This procedure invites the viewer to experience new circumstances and perhaps rethink their relationship to the world around them.
In the exhibition will be: Finials, small sculptures on pedestals meant to reference architectural structures and Pendulum by Artur Lescher; an installation by Carvalhosa composed of mirrored aluminum oils and tubular lamps and Maggi presents Podium, a triptych of three panels each different sizes and colors composed of signs carved with precision on metallic sheets.
