Tribute to Ambassador Sérgio Silva do Amaral (June 1, 1944 – July 13, 2023) On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce, we regretfully inform you of the passing, at the age of 79, of Ambassador Sérgio Silva do Amaral, Minister of Development, Industry, and Foreign Trade of Brazil (2001-03); Ambassador of Brazil to the United States (2016-19); and longtime Chamber affiliate and supporter.   Born in São Paulo, Brazil in 1944, Ambassador Amaral studied law at Universidade de São Paulo (USP) and earned a postgraduate degree in Political Science from Sorbonne Université in Paris, France.  In 1994, he mediated negotiations between Brazil and international creditors to reduce the country’s foreign debt.  He held high positions in public administration, including Executive Secretary of the Ministry of the Environment, Secretary of Communication, and Spokesperson for the Presidency of the Republic under President Fernando Henrique Cardoso.  Before serving as Ambassador of Brazil to the United States, he headed the Embassies of Brazil in London (1999-2001) and in Paris (2003-05).   Ambassador Amaral was appointed Chairman of the Board of Câmara de Comércio Exterior (Camex) and of Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (BNDES).  In addition to his brilliant career as an attorney, diplomat, and politician, he was Professor of International Relations at Universidade de Brasília.   Ambassador Amaral’s dialogue with the Chamber strengthened ties between Brazil and the United States and furthered the Chamber’s mission of promoting trade and investment between the two nations.  His commitment, contributions, and long history of service to Brazil will endure.
