More than just street art, this is a tribute to the living memory and cultural richness of Porto Grande — a neighborhood of about 500 residents with deep Afro-Indigenous roots. The Origens Project aims to celebrate local matriarchs and patriarchs, preserve traditional knowledge, and inspire reflection on the urgent need for environmental protection.
“This exchange with the other artists has been an incredible learning experience,” says Wally, the 22-year-old self-taught artist born and raised in Porto Grande. “Hearing the stories from the elders of the neighborhood really moved me. I feel honored and proud — this mural truly represents who I am.”
Strategically located along the main street, on the path to the local school, the mural couldn’t come at a better time. Once a semi-rural enclave, Porto Grande is now at the crossroads of rapid urbanization and environmental challenges. Nestled between the beach and the Mãe-Bá Lagoon, the area boasts breathtaking natural beauty — but also faces mounting pressure from real estate development, threatening its forests and waters.
After living more than two decades in New York, Chris Barreto returned to Brazil during the Covid-19 pandemic, seeking a peaceful place to reconnect with her roots and create art. Porto Grande, where her family is from, offered the perfect setting. There, she met Wally and together they envisioned what would become the Origens Project, later bringing in Starley Bonfim, already an active figure in the local art scene.
“The connection between us was immediate — a beautiful synergy based on our shared passion for urban art and our commitment to raising social awareness by honoring our Afro-Indigenous heritage here in Espírito Santo,” shares Chris, who spearheaded the project. The mural was made possible with funding from the Paulo Gustavo Law and Funcultura, through the Espírito Santo State Secretariat of Culture and the Ministry of Culture, with support from Real Empreendimentos and Linconvix Alpinismo e Serviços Industriais.
For Starley, the experience was nothing short of inspiring. “It’s been an honor to work alongside such talented artists — an internationally acclaimed creator and a charismatic young talent,” he says. “Despite the challenges of working under the hot sun and pouring rain, the experience has been transformative. The community’s response has been incredible — seeing the children’s reactions to the artwork is especially rewarding.”
But this is just the beginning. The mural in Porto Grande marks the launch of the Origens Project, which plans to extend its creative mission to other communities around the Mãe-Bá Lagoon and beyond. The team is already dreaming of international collaborations — including in the United States, where Chris built much of her illustrious career.
