Lelé em Piri: the legacy of an architect who transformed Brazil

The historic  Pirenópolis'city  is preparing to host a major cultural event starting in May 2026. The exhibition “Lelé in Piri” will open on May 22nd with a cocktail reception for invited guests, and will be open to the public from May 23rd at the welcoming Maria Guilhermina Cultural Space, located in the charming Pousada Relais Amadeus.

The event pays a comprehensive tribute to the architect João Filgueiras Lima (1932–2014), affectionately known as Lelé, one of the most important figures in 20th-century Brazilian architecture. Recognized by Lúcio Costa as one of the great masters of the field, Lelé's career was deeply linked to the urban development of Brasília, where he moved in 1957. There, he participated in the construction of the first superquadra (superblock) of the new capital and collaborated with iconic names such as Oscar Niemeyer.

The exhibition in Pirenópolis seeks to highlight not only his architectural production but also his emotional connection to the interior of Goiás state. During the early 1980s, Lelé frequented the region regularly and even resided in the city of Abadiânia between 1982 and 1984, at the invitation of Frei Mateus Rocha, then vice-rector of the University of Brasília. It was during this period that he implemented innovative solutions for the construction of rural schools and daycare centers, using industrialized systems with reinforced mortar and steel—one of his greatest contributions to social and functional architecture in Brazil.

This period in Goiás represents a particularly symbolic chapter in Lelé's trajectory, both for the social impact of his works and for the human connections he established. A concrete example of this presence can still be seen in the traditional Jerivá Restaurant, whose initial design incorporated elements of the architect, at the request of his friend João Benko.

The exhibition “Lelé in Piri” proposes a sensory immersion in the life and work of the architect, bringing together photographs by Maylena Clécia Gonçalves and Tarcísio Paniago, as well as featuring the cultural production of Gilberto Lacerda Santos. The images, which will be available for sale, capture different phases and aspects of Lelé's career, highlighting his pursuit of a more human, efficient, and accessible architecture.

Throughout his career, Lelé accumulated numerous awards and recognitions, such as the Gold Collar of the Brazilian Institute of Architects, the Ibero-American Architecture and Urbanism Biennial Award, and the Gold Medal of the Pan-American Federation of Architects' Associations, consolidating his legacy both in Brazil and abroad. He also received prestigious academic titles, such as Professor Emeritus of the University of Brasília (UnB) and Doctor Honoris Causa from the Federal University of Bahia, a state where he made important contributions to urban and hospital infrastructure.

Open for visits from Tuesday to Sunday, from 2 pm to 6 pm, the exhibition represents a unique opportunity for residents and visitors of Pirenópolis to learn more about the trajectory of an architect who revolutionized the way construction is conceived in Brazil. More than an art exhibition, “Lelé em Piri” is an invitation to reflect on architecture, innovation, and social commitment, in a setting that unites history, culture, and memory.
