In 2013, a group of students on the south side of Chicago asked their classmates to wear orange in memory of a friend whose life had been taken by gun violence.
That single act of remembrance for a friend has grown into a nationwide movement, and on Friday, June 2nd and Saturday, June 3rd, millions of people will wear orange for National Gun Violence Awareness Day.
It's an opportunity to remember those we've lost to acts of gun violence and a moment to come together as we keep up the push for common-sense gun laws that will help put an end to gun violence in this country.
Say you'll attend a Wear Orange event happening in your area -- here are the details:
What: Gun Violence Prevention Event
Where: Brooklyn Bridge
New York, NY 10007
When: Saturday, June 3ʳᵈ
2:00 pm
It's up to all of us to keep fighting for steps forward on this issue. We need to keep speaking out together until Congress takes action.
Millions of people will be doing their part this week -- I hope you can get involved and make it to an event near you.

Tom Zé
June 3 @ 8 pm BAM
Music legend Tom Zé, the avant garde conscience of Brazil’s 1960s Tropicália movement, presents an evening of samba and bossa nova reimagined as only he can. A dauntless innovator whose records made beguiling experimental bedfellows of rock, folk, electronic music, and found sounds, Zé fell into obscurity until the 90s, when he was rediscovered and signed as the first artist on David Byrne’s Luaka Bop label. At BAM, he resumes his place in Brazil’s musical firmament, exuberantly channeling the spirit of Salvador and São Paulo with new and old songs alike. A thinker, an iconoclast, a mad scientist, a snappy pop artisan and one of the most serious jokesters in musical history.”
—The New York Times “...music that is utterly joyous, listenable and often danceable...” —The Fader “...a brilliant musician...”

Débora Watts Record of her new CD
The girl from Saquarema, a small beach town 90 miles north of Rio de Janeiro, Débora Watts, grew up believing she was going to be a scientist. Although she loved dancing and singing, she attended a Chemistry Technical school during her high school years and Pharmacy at the University UFRJ in Rio de Janeiro. After hearing a Brazilian music performance at the club “Cafe Wha?” in 1997, Débora shared with her future husband--the musician John Allen Watts--that her true dream was to be a singer. With John’s encouragement Débora started taking private singing lessons with the Brazilian MPB vocalist Barbara Mendes and with the rock singer Robyn Dawn.
Débora started performing as a solo artist as well as with many Brazilian & Latin bands, performing samba with Pé-de Boi and Saveiro, Latin jazz with Oriente Lopez band, Bossa Nova with Mark Morganelli & The Jazz Forum All-Stars band, Brazilian jazz with Billy Newman’s Brooklyn Brazil Bop Band, to name a few. Brazilian Breeze, a band that Débora started with her husband, John Allen Watts, also received a lot of attention by performing throughout the NYC metro area, including numerous programs on behalf of community arts and cultural organizations at venues such as the Brooklyn Museum and Flushing Town Hall.
In 2013 Débora started composing her own music and in January 2017 she recorded her second CD of all original music. The CD was recorded in Brazil, at the Studio Tenda da Raposa, in the neighborhood of Lapa, Rio de Janeiro.
Débora’s eclectic CD, arranged and produced by John Allen Watts, includes many well-known Brazilian classics such as Inútil Paisagem and Água de Beber and was mixed and mastered by Grammy Award-winning engineer, David Darlington of Bass Hit Recording (Sting, etc.) More details about the recording can be found in Débora’s blog: http://www.debora-cd.blogspot.com
Débora’s first album has been accepted by radio stations domestic and worldwide including Antena 2 in Portugal, Radio Art in Greece, MRS 90,5 FM in Sweden, RTC Cape Verde, as well as WRHU (Jazz Café) and KKUP in the US.
To record her new CD, Debora Watts went straight from New York to the pulsing heart of music in Rio de Janeiro: Lapa. Débora is looking forward to her CD release party in June of 2017 most likely in the Bohemian neighborhood of Lapa in Rio de Janeiro.
