" Two Irenes", by Fabio Meira
November 5
Anthology Film Archives

By chance, Brazilian teenager Irene (newcomer Priscila Bittencourt, in an assured performance) discovers that there is another 13-year-old Irene living in the same town. Curiously, she observes the confident, cheerful girl who lives alone with her mother. She is fascinated by this other world beyond the bounds of her own well-to-do and traditional family. This other Irene seems free. Soon the two girls, apparently so different from each other, are spending every day together, meeting up with boys in the cinema or going to the lake. When they start talking about their fathers, they notice that they have more in common than they had thought. Winner of the Best First Feature and Best Cinematography awards at the Guadalajara Film Festival, this debut feature by Fabio Meira is an exquisite mosaic that weaves a wonderfully delicate web around questions of identity, true friendship, and the first steps towards adulthood.

VISUAL ARTS
Exhibition "Lusco-Fusco", by Patricia leite

September 12 - October  27
Mendes Wood

Patricia Leite’s exhibition lusco-fusco [last light of the day] presents a new body of painting inspired by momentary meetings of darkness and light. Inviting us to grasp the sensation of an object alight, Leite portrays light alive with vibration, at once optically tangible and sentimentally fleeting.

Leite’s paintings are derived from ‘sketchbook’ of photographs, akin to a visual diary collected from various sources. These referential images present a point of departure for the tone and form of each painting. As Leite elaborates on the sentiment that inspired her to approach each scene, she freely abstracts and experiments to come to a playful somberness, where soft masses of color are seemingly suspended in nimble outlines of pointed light.

VISUAL ARTS
Lygia Pape
September 6 - October 20
Hauser & Wirth

A founding member of Brazil’s Neo-Concrete movement, Lygia Pape (1927 – 2004) valued art that favored the primacy of the viewer and his or her sensorial experience. Pape explored rich territory via the media of sculpture, drawing, engraving, filmmaking, and installation, and cemented her reputation as one of the most significant Brazilian artists of her generation. On view from 6 September through 20 October at Hauser & Wirth New York, 69th Street, this exhibition marks the gallery’s first solo presentation of Pape’s work in the United States since announcing worldwide representation of Projeto Lygia Pape in 2016.

Organizing for Action

It's hard to overstate how much is at stake this November.

In key U.S. House races across the country, we can vote out a Congress that voted to rip health care from their constituents, slashed taxes for billionaires at the expense of working families, and failed to make our communities safe from gun violence.

We can elect leaders who will stand up for their constituents.

Candidates around the country are fighting for:
  • Affordable, accessible health care
  • Common-sense solutions to reduce gun violence
  • An economy that works for the middle class
OFA has identified several priority districts where current Republican representatives have worked against the will and well-being of their constituents.

You can make calls right from your own home THIS WEEK to speak with constituents in one of those districts -- and make sure they help elect leaders who will actually fight for the people they represent.

We’ve all been down that road. Relationship equals getting to know every bit, smell, attitude, smile, twitch… You name it.
You want to love and be loved, right? Then, there`s no other way but entangle your being to another.
The cost of it? The reward for that?
This piece goes way beyond words to portray something that’s been going on throughout centuries and generations.
When it starts, how it’s gonna end?
Tangle with us and find out how we solve this conundrum!
