The Board of Directors & Staff of the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce of Florida would like you to know that the priority for the BACCF is first and foremost, the safety and well-being of our members and partners. The BACCF is postponing all events indefinitely through the month of April given the increasing number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States and across the globe.

We will share more information about the new dates for these events as soon as the situation has been contained, and it is once again secure for public gatherings to take place. We are organizing a series of webinars within the next few weeks and will be contacting you soon to participate in this innovative series of roundtable talks.

We would like to invite you to participate in the first webinar on April 2nd for a general membership meeting, where we can network online and hear your suggestions in keeping the BACCF and our members active. We will be sending out the invitation shortly.

Mid-Month Goal:
$25,000

Contributions Needed From New York:
23

March Contribution From
sula_costa@yahoo.com:
NOT YET*

Hi Sula! I've been running the numbers to check on our progress toward our $25,000 mid-month goal, and we're not quite there yet. So, naturally, I decided to break it down state by state -- and it turns out that if just 23 more supporters from New York pitch in before the deadline, we'll hit our goal!

Will you rush a donation right now to help us do it? This year is our final opportunity to beat Republican map manipulators before redistricting in 2021, and we need to hit every goal we set.

With your help, we've reached nearly all of our goals so far -- and that's allowed us to make HUGE progress in the fight to end gerrymandering. Since 2017 we've:
  • won TEN governor's races
  • flipped EIGHT state legislative chambers
  • won THREE downballot elections!
We're targeting even more races this year, and with the continued support of this grassroots team we can break Republican control in states from Texas to North Carolina.

But Election Day is getting closer by the minute, and we need you NOW! Rush a donation before tomorrow's midnight deadline and be one of the 23 people we need from New York to help us reach our mid-month goal:

Last week, A.G. Holder outlined what we'll need to put a stop to map manipulation.   We've proven that this is a movement powered by the people.  We need 10 volunteers from every state to join our volunteer team if we want to build on the work that volunteers like Shelia have already begun. Join the AOTL volunteer team!

Hey Sula -- As the 2020 Census hits mailboxes, I wanted to remind folks that this is more than just a population count. It's an opportunity to shape the future of our communities, especially for traditionally undercounted people like communities of color, the LGBTQ community, Native communities, people living with disabilities, and children and young people.

The census really is the foundation of redistricting. If we want an accurate count and fair maps, we need to do our part by filling out the census -- and encouraging our friends and families to do the same. That's why, as a member of AOTL's 2020 Census working group, I'm reaching out to remind you.

I just received my census in the mail this morning -- it took less than five minutes to complete and I was able to fill it out online. Quick, easy and accessible. In fact, the census is available in 13 languages and also has a toolkit for folks living with disabilities. Filling out the census was an easy way to make a direct impact on redistricting and how my community will be represented for the next decade.

Make sure you're counted by completing the census! If you've received your form, head over to my2020census.gov and use the Census ID they mailed you to get started.

Subject: Three things you need to know about the census

With the redistricting process less than a year away, All On The Line is already in full swing -- especially because 2020 is a census year. Here's what you need to know about the role that the census plays in redistricting.
→ The census is the foundation for redistricting. Without an accurate count, it will be impossible to create fair maps that truly represent the communities who live there.

→ The census count will determine how many congressional districts each state will have for the next decade. With 435 representatives total, that means states could gain or lose a district based on population changes.

→ The Supreme Court stopped the Trump administration's attempt to add a citizenship question to the census, but we expect that map manipulators will try to find new ways to suppress the power of certain communities in an attempt to maintain their own power.
We have a long road ahead in the fight for fair maps. All On The Line is committed to fighting to ensure communities across the country are fairly represented. Help fund this important work!

If even one eligible voter's name is missing from the poll book [or they] must leave a long line ... our elections are not truly free and fair. -- Stacey Abrams & Eric H. Holder, Jr.

Sula -- Democratic turnout in the presidential primaries has been sky-high. That's the good news.

The bad news is that we've been seeing brutal Republican voter suppression policies in action. In Texas, the state has closed hundreds of polling sites in communities of color and people were forced to wait as long as seven hours to vote!

The fact is, winning in 2020 and achieving fair maps in 2021 won't be easy. Republicans control the entire redistricting process in five of our target states. And they won our only targeted 2020 race so far, in Texas' HD-28. If Democrats don't focus on down-ballot races, we could see a repeat of 2010.

We won't let it happen. We're just $7,202 away from our mid-month goal, and the deadline is midnight. Will you pitch in so we can elect Democrats who will ensure fairness going forward?

Tweet from A.G. Holder calling for an 18 year limit to Supreme Court appointments.

Sula -- Did you see A.G. Holder's tweet? He thinks -- and we agree -- that Supreme Court justices should no longer receive lifetime appointments. The addition of Trump-appointed justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh has been bad news for fair redistricting, voting rights, and countless other issues we care about, and they could be on the court for decades.

We want to know what you think! Should the U.S. limit Supreme Court terms to 18 years?

The Shape Of Things: FL-01

The district: Florida's 1st Congressional District covers the state's western panhandle and according to FiveThirtyEight has a 99.9% chance of being represented by a Republican.

Who represents it? Matt Gaetz. A recent Rolling Stone article tells you about everything you need to know: "He plasters his face across Fox News; he feuds with his enemies on Twitter; he orchestrates controversial publicity stunts like inviting Holocaust denier Charles Johnson to the State of the Union in 2018 (Gaetz later claimed he didn't know about Johnson's anti-Semitism), or introduces dead-in-the-water legislation to disband the Environmental Protection Agency." If you're wondering what drives Gaetz, it's pretty simple. Take it from the man himself after he got a poll back showing high favorability within his own party: "Republicans in Florida would do unspeakable things for the numbers I have with the base."

FL-01 District

Our Shape of Things series raises awareness about the barriers to political representation in local communities and provides an opportunity to support our fight for their representation. Will you consider adopting FL-01 with a recurring donation of any amount? Our monthly donors support our work in all of our target states and receive fewer fundraising emails.

How did we get here? Redistricting in Florida has been a roller coaster. Despite what appeared to be a big victory for reform in 2010, the maps were still rigged through backroom deals and then litigated in the courts over the course of several years, ultimately improving but not totally fixing the maps. The Fair Districts amendments that voters passed at the ballot in 2010 aimed to remove partisan bias from any future maps. And at first, the legislature even appeared to engage the public in the redistricting process, holding 26 public hearings. But it was all a front, while the state's maps were actually being gerrymandered in backroom meetings happening at the Republican Party's headquarters. Those meetings were what ultimately led a court to rule that "unconstitutional partisan intent" tainted the redistricting process and ultimately led Florida's Supreme Court to approve new maps that redrew some -- but not all -- of the state's congressional districts in 2015.

Why does this matter? Gaetz represents a district where he knows the general election isn't as consequential as a conservative primary challenger. It's why he, and lawmakers in so many gerrymandered districts -- in FL and nationwide -- stake out extreme positions. It couldn't be clearer how extremism and gerrymandering contribute to the reality of how our democracy is broken.

What's next for FL? Census, census, census. The state's population is booming, which could lead to it gaining two congressional districts. This makes the 2020 Census that is now underway extremely important in the Sunshine State. Inaction by Florida governor Ron DeSantis is already endangering an accurate count by underfunding the census -- it is one of 24 states that have not spent a penny on census-related efforts. This is further compounded by fear in immigrant communities of completing the form after the Trump administration's failed attempt to add a "citizenship question" to the survey.

Florida is one of All On The Line's priority states, but we're working against power-hungry incumbents and well-funded special interests. In order to restore fairness in districts across the state, it is critical that we fund these plans with sustained donations. Can you help our efforts in all our priority states by adopting FL-01 with a recurring contribution?

 Sula,

We knew we'd be up against a lot in the last year before redistricting: the fallout from a misguided Supreme Court ruling, deep-pocketed Republican groups, Paul Ryan and Scott Walker, and much more.

But now the Wall Street Journal editorial board -- a den of far-right opinion -- is straight-up LYING about A.G. Holder's position on reform in Virginia. And it's not the first time. Will you help us defeat the lies, win elections, and secure fair maps in 2021?
Wall street journal: Eric Holder's Redistricting Flip -- FALSE!
Look -- it's no surprise that Republicans and conservatives are doing everything in their power to keep us from achieving fair maps. After all, gerrymandering has been working out pretty well for them!

But A.G. Holder isn't the type to give up in the face of opposition, and neither are we. This is the team that's already helped flip 10 governor's offices, take back eight legislative chambers, and break four Republican supermajorities. We can win in all of our target states this year and secure fair maps in 2021 -- but we need your help now.

Will you pitch in to show the GOP that we're going to take this fight for fairness through to the end?
