A NEW YEAR’S TALE OF CAUTION – OFAC Settlement Highlights Risks for Those Dealing in Digital Currencies

What Happened: OFAC settled with BitGo, Inc. for $98,830, resolving 183 apparent violations of multiple US sanctions programs for processing digital currency transactions on behalf of individuals located in sanctioned jurisdictions.

The Bottom Line: Companies providing digital currency services should be aware of sanctions risks and should implement compliance procedures sufficient to ensure that they do not deal with blocked persons or otherwise engage in transactions prohibited by sanctions.  This action also cautions financial institutions subject to US jurisdiction of the sanctions risks associated with interacting with digital or crypto currency providers.

The Full Story: Amid the rise of digital currency services, the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) published a cautionary tale on December 30, 2020, discussing a recent settlement with BitGo, Inc. (BitGo), a California-based technology company that facilitates digital currency transactions and provides non-custodial digital wallet management services. BitGo settled for $98,830 after the company faced, at a maximum, a $53 million civil penalty for 183 apparent violations of multiple US sanctions programs.

Many corporations and other organizations that import goods through São Paulo and resell them in interstate transactions in Brazil accumulate large amounts of ICMS (Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services), because the tax rate on imports is 18% while on sales to other states is only 4%. In this webinar, we will analyze the effect of the suspension of the ICMS import tax, how to mitigate high balances on entry and exit, and implications for tax reform. This will be the second installment of this webinar series and will be held in English.

Although the artist had a very different style in his garden designs, there was not even a creation as a stereotype and, as a landscaper, Burle Marx (1909-1994) did not use any technique that would modify the natural shape of plants.

The Modernist Garden is idealized by the World Art Show and inspired by the New York Botanical Garden - The path bordered by native Brazilian plants is similar to the path of the artists who make up the scene of the visual arts of the ambiance where Fabiana Pretti participe in a ambiance designed by Sandra Cantuário and Ana Carla Pagliosa.

U.S. 10-Year Treasury Yield Hits 1% for First Time Since March

Yields started climbing as early returns from the Georgia runoff elections tilted toward Democrats

The yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note rose above 1% for the first time since March, after returns from Georgia’s closely watched runoff elections fueled bets that Democrats will win narrow control of the Senate.

In recent trading, the yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was 1.049%, according to Tradeweb, up from 0.955% at its 3 p.m. ET close Tuesday.

Democrat Raphael Warnock defeated incumbent Kelly Loeffler in one of the Georgia runoffs, according to the Associated Press. Democrat Jon Ossoff also held a small advantage in the other runoff, though that contest remained too close...

PHILIP

HEARSEY

Eternity

November 9th 2020 - January 29th 2021

ONLINE VIEWING with ARTNET

Lives and works in Longtown, Herfordshire, UK
Born in 1946, Hampshire, UK

Philip Hearsey is an experienced British sculptor who has exhibited his work throughout the UK but also all over the world. He specializes in sand casting to make sculptures that engage the quality of bronze as a noble material in its own right. Casting in sand moulds is a simple and ancient method far removed from the sophisticated lost wax operation used by most art foundries. The sand casting process is relentless and unforgiving – the foundry is no place for a delicate original. It denies a complexity of form that imposes a disciplinary and enriching simplicity. Color is achieved in many ways. The most common and widely used method is to oxidize (patinate) the bronze by employing the same chemical reaction that occurs in nature, but using a combination of mild heat and stronger solutions to achieve a faster result. Patination can be enhanced by the application of a transparent colorwash that maintains the inimitable variegated effects that are possible with oxidization, whilst producing a more vivid finish. The most usual colorwash is acrylic, but oil-bound washes or colored waxes are sometimes used. Coloring can also be achieved by painting alone and often this technique is utilized on part of a sculpture in combination with patination. Painting allows a greater range of colors than patination alone. All coloring is finished and protected by a marine grade lacquer and/or wax.

Philip lives and works on the Welsh borders of Herefordshire – a beautiful place, still remote and largely unaltered, landlocked and very slow in change. This is in sharp contrast to the coast that he also loves, where everything changes twice a day with the rise and fall of each tide.
