We have UPDATES for you about the fight for fair maps -- let's start with the good news!

➞ In Michigan, the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission just passed FAIR congressional and state legislative maps!

Holder tweet: Truly independent and well designed redistricting commissions can work. The Michigan gerrymanders were ended by the concerned citizens of the state who put their Commission in place. I am proud to have supported them in that effort.

➞ On top of that, California's Citizens Redistricting Commission also recently adopted FAIR maps -- with unanimous votes!

This is a BIG DEAL, Sula. The Washington Post is reporting that “There has been a redistricting turnaround,” which is both THRILLING and a testament to the power of your support. But our coast-to-coast fight against gerrymandering is far from over:

➞ In Pennsylvania, legislative Republicans are playing tricks to try to push through their manipulated maps.

➞ And 170 congressional district maps have yet to be adopted, including in swing states like Florida and Wisconsin!

The truth is, what happens next is up to us. Will we be able to keep turning things around on redistricting? Or will Republicans in key states be able to force through a decade of rigged maps? Don’t leave it up to chance -- CHIP IN NOW!

In the last few days, we've seen headlines like this:
'Redistricting is Going Surprisingly Well for Democrats' 'Democrats Are Doing Weirdly Well in Redistricting' 'Surprisingly, there has been a redistricting turnaround' This isn’t surprising—and it isn’t by accident.)

Sula -- the media is starting to catch on to the fact that our efforts to stop Republican gerrymandering are having an impact.

It’s about time! For years now, the NDRC has been working hard to prepare the public and policymakers for redistricting, help win elections, and put the pieces in place to secure fair maps. So while we’re not “surprised” that our strategy is working, we are incredibly grateful to this community for giving us the resources to make it happen. Will you make your first donation of 2022 to help us keep up the fight?

President Obama recently said: [The NDRC has] been the difference between not just victory and defeat, but between a fair shot for the American people and a system that cuts the American people out.

Here’s a recap of some of the latest victories in the fight for fair maps:

  • States like Michigan, New Jersey, and California have adopted fair maps.
  • In many states where Republicans have gerrymandered, voters have filed lawsuits.
  • And the U.S. Department of Justice sued Texas over its gerrymandered maps.

But Sula, we’re still fighting for fair maps in important states like Pennsylvania, Florida, Kentucky, and more. Nearly 156 congressional district maps have yet to be enacted! So please don’t let up on your support -- we need to see this process through to the end. Will you pitch in now?

Voters made it clear: they want leaders to create a political system that is fair for everyone. But the mandate to restore our democracy is being met with obstruction by hyper-partisan politicians who would rather protect their power at the expense of the people.

"The ACLU has opened more than 100 voting rights, investigations since Shelby, filling more than two dozen cases in 2020 alone."

During 2021, legislators -- particularly in gerrymandered states -- introduced more than 425 bills in an effort to silence voters and keep extreme politicians safe from real accountability.

Democracy reforms like the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act can halt many of these anti-voting bills altogether or mitigate the damage they’d cause.

All On the Line is committed to building grassroots power to advocate for these pro-democracy bills to become law -- especially as we witness new efforts to undermine our democracy.

In recent elections, conservatives took advantage of a weakened Voting Rights Act and unleashed a wave of voter suppression laws.

They spent 2021 pulling a page from their familiar, anti-democratic playbook once again -- conjuring up new efforts in an attempt to undermine our democracy, restrict voting rights, and manipulate our maps.

In the face of more than 425 voter suppression bills introduced across the country, the All On The Line movement is supporting legislation that would expand voting rights, reform redistricting rules, and make our political system fairer for everyone. But we need your help, Sula!

We started the AOTL Rebuilding Democracy Fund in early 2021 when there were only 100 voter suppression bills introduced -- the stakes are even higher now. We need to take strong action to prevent undemocratic bills like these from becoming law in 2022.

Your donation will help efforts to advocate for reform, empower volunteers to stop anti-democratic voting restrictions, and educate the public on how to ensure fair maps in their state.

"Despite the challenges we face in rebuilding our democracy, there is hope -- and a clear path forward. And it starts with comprehensive democracy reform: strengthening voting rights, reforming redistricting, and instituting higher ethics standards in our government." -- President Obama
We’re fighting for comprehensive democracy reform. And we’re starting 2022 off strong by advocating for the Freedom to Vote Act.

Earlier this week, our executive director Biz sent around a message on the trends in map manipulation that we want to end in 2022. With just over 24 hours left in the year, will you chip in $22?

We really do rely on grassroots donors to help us hit our fundraising goals and I’m hoping we can get a few more people from NY to chip in. Here’s a custom link to make a donation: secure.actblue.com/donate/2021-trends?Costa-211230

Thanks for your support. Hope you have a great start to your new year!

Hey friend -- In a meeting earlier this week, our President Kelly Burton noted a trend in the ongoing threats against our democracy.

Here’s how map manipulators are doubling down on their 2011 approach and taking things a step further:

→ gerrymandering maps that eliminate competitive districts
→ suppressing voting power -- specifically in communities of color
→ ignoring public input

The way we see it, all of these trends are a reaction to voters and activists like you getting involved.

Will you consider donating $22 to All On The Line as we gear up to combat threats against democracy in 2022? Here’s a link to our end-of-year donation drive: secure.actblue.com/donate/2021-trends

Thanks for your support,
Biz

Sula, here’s why it’s important for you and your neighbors to keep making any investment you can -- $5, $15, or $50 -- to our movement:

We are fighting against a political party that is no longer anchored by democratic principles. But I have seen great change in how deeply engaged the public is in the redistricting process compared to 10 years ago.

I’m not being hyperbolic or alarmist: our democracy is on the line. But our future doesn’t have to repeat the painful experiences of the past.

Inaction is not an option right now, which is why I need to ask you to make a donation today.

Will you pitch in to help All On The Line do everything possible to fight for fair maps that are responsive to the voters?

All On The Line has hindered the ability of politicians to gerrymander as much as they did in 2011 by putting people and systems in place that are designed to deliver fair maps. And in many places where map drawers are now gerrymandering along partisan or racial lines, we are supporting voters’ challenges to those maps in court, and we plan to win.

Our organization’s leadership in this regard is already having an impact. Less than an hour after Governor Abbott signed gerrymandered maps into law in October, Texas voters -- with the support of our team -- filed a challenge against the new congressional map. And this month, the Department of Justice joined in the fight, filing a companion challenge against the gerrymandered congressional map.

You all are a part of our movement that makes this possible and it will take all of us to ensure that we succeed.

Without your support, we would not be able to fight for a truly representative democracy that advances equality, justice, and opportunity for all Americans -- especially those who are too often without a voice.

We’re up against forces that are willing to cheat to maintain majority rule even when they have minority support from the people. Concerted effort and serious commitment are the only ways to fight back.

Will you show us your commitment today with a donation of any amount? Every dollar helps us defend against new attacks on fair elections.

The battle to save our democracy is the defining political fight of this moment. We can win it, but only if we continue to see the overwhelming response this community has shown thus far.

Thank you,
Eric H. Holder, Jr.

Sharing these notes from an NDRC digital team meeting about what's coming down the pike:

  • Only roughly half of states have adopted maps
➞ Approx. 194 congressional districts left to draw
  • Lawsuits in AL, NC, OH, TX
  • Federal legislation
    ➞ Pass FTVA and VRAA!

Let me explain. First, there are plenty of districts still to be drawn, so the fight for fair maps is as relevant as ever. Not only have roughly half the states not adopted their maps yet, but the lawsuits I mentioned have the potential to "reset" maps in some of those states.

Then there's the wildcard -- the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. The media is reporting we may see movement on these bills early in the new year, which could be a gamechanger for our work!

Here's my takeaway: We have a lot of work left, and we need you on our side more than ever. That brings me to fundraising. I know online donations can slow down as people unplug over the holidays, but we really need to hit our end-of-year goal in order to keep pushing our work forward. Can I count on your support?
