Hi Sula – We just got out of a staff meeting, and I wanted to give you an inside look into the work the NDRC is doing to fight gerrymandering. So I took some notes to share with the team! ➞ In Ohio, Republicans in the legislature have tried to run out the clock by submitting round after round of manipulated maps as primary elections draw closer. ➞ In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis vetoed his own party’s maps because they weren’t gerrymandered enough… so lawmakers are likely to start over in a special session. Litigation ➞ The U.S. Supreme Court continues to contradict itself. On the heels of a decision leaving the GOP’s manipulated maps in place in Alabama in part because it was too close to the election to change them, the Court reversed a Wisconsin Supreme Court decision implementing Governor Tony Evers’ maps in their state! ➞ Some Republicans are now promoting a dangerous fringe legal theory that holds only state legislatures have authority over congressional elections. It’s designed to bypass courts standing in the way of map manipulation – but luckily, it hasn’t succeeded (yet). Campaigns ➞ Some states still haven’t finished their redistricting processes, so we’ll need to continue pushing for fair maps in those states. But we’re also looking ahead to what’s next! ➞ With the 2022 midterms approaching, we’re gearing up to support candidates around the country who will fight to end gerrymandering and protect the constitutional right to vote. As you can see, there’s a lot going in the fight for fair maps. And believe me: Absolutely NONE of our work would be possible without support from people like you!
Thanks, and more updates soon!

Make no mistake, Sula: Our work has already made a difference with respect to the 2022 midterm elections. But Republicans are still doing everything they can to skew both the midterm and future elections, including continued attempts to gerrymander, restricting the freedom to vote, stacking state supreme courts, and promoting dangerous legal theories that say state legislatures should be the only authority when it comes to congressional elections.
Thanks,

CNN has reported that the upcoming midterm elections “will decide the future of the January 6 investigation.”
Since Democrats created and make up the majority of the committee investigating the insurrection, a Republican takeover of the House could mean a total disbandment of the committee and the investigation -- and no one would be held accountable.
🚨With states still finalizing congressional maps AND Republicans needing every advantage they can get to take the majority, the outcome of the redistricting process may also impact the outcome of the Jan. 6 investigation.🚨
Will you make a donation -- of any amount -- to support our efforts to finish the redistricting process strong? We don’t have much time left before the entire 2022 congressional map is set in stone.

The Jan. 6 committee is racing to investigate and hold accountable those who perpetrated the attack while the threat of a Republican-controlled House looms in the background.
We can do our part to defend democracy by fighting for fair maps and giving voters the chance to cast their ballots in fair congressional districts.

less than 24 hours, Pennsylvania voters will cast their ballots in three special elections for state House. We’ll be upfront: These races are critical.
Republicans have already admitted that keeping control of the Pennsylvania legislature is a top priority for them this year – and these three seats could help them expand their majority.
The GOP is hellbent on keeping control in Pennsylvania – they even went so far as to demand a sham election review of the 2020 election, casting doubt on our elections and playing right into Trump’s fear mongering.
But we have incredible Democrats running tomorrow that have proven track records of fighting for what’s right and delivering for their communities. These races could be our first step towards reclaiming control in Pennsylvania – so, can we count on you to chip in and send Republicans a message that we’re NOT backing down in states like Pennsylvania and beyond? >>

These races could mean the difference between a Democratic leader or a rubber stamp for the right-wing agenda. Just take a look at two of our candidates:
- Martell Covington has been a community activist and non-profit leader for as long as he can remember. He’s devoted to passing life-saving criminal justice legislation, including ending the death penalty and addressing the school-to-prison pipeline.
- Aerion Abney has dedicated his life to service as a social worker and leader of a national voting rights organization. He’s worked to expand access to the ballot box, and has advocated for greater funding for STEM, preschool, and after-school programs.
Martell and Aerion will be tireless advocates for all Pennsylvanians if they’re elected. But the GOP is doing everything they can to stop candidates like them not just in Pennsylvania, but in states across the country.
Thanks,
DLCC Team
Sula – Here at the NDRC, we’ve seen our fair share of Supreme Court decisions, good and bad. But we were baffled when the Court’s conservative majority ignored its own precedent to reject the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s reasoning for adopting fairer maps. Salon:
This decision follows another recent decision that allowed Republican-drawn maps in Alabama to stay in place, reasoning that it was too close to the election to change them. Yet that concern apparently did not apply in Wisconsin, where primary elections are also coming up soon!
Thank you,
