Tribute to Lino Otto Bohn |
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce, we regretfully inform you of the passing, on March 27, 2023 at the age of 102, of Lino Otto Bohn, former General Manager of Banco do Brasil New York, President of the Chamber from 1974-76, and longtime Chamber member and supporter. A friend to many members and Directors, Mr. Bohn was always willing to assist the Chamber and partnered on many initiatives. His participation in joint projects elevated the quality of Chamber programs and strengthened ties between Brazil and the United States. Mr. Bohn was born on September 21, 1920 in Montenegro, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Faculdade de Ciências Econômicas do Rio de Janeiro. In 1942, he joined Banco do Brasil, to which he dedicated the majority of his career. As a representative of Banco do Brasil’s Foreign Trade Group, he became part of a workgroup focused on the recovery of foreign cotton markets. He was appointed Director of Foreign Trade and was subsequently sent on missions to Europe, including Germany, Belgium, Holland, the Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Italy, and Switzerland (1958-59).
After serving as a representative of the Brazilian Trade Bureau in New York, Mr. Bohn opened a Banco do Brasil branch in Hamburg, Germany. In 1972, he moved to New York and assumed the role of General Manager of Banco do Brasil New York, a position he held through 1986. In this role, he was instrumental in managing Brazil’s position amidst the international debt crisis. He successfully opened a Banco do Brasil branch in Grand Cayman, of which he was named General Manager. He also established and became Manager of Banco do Brasil Leasing Corporation, headquartered in New York, which jumpstarted the sale and leasing of Embraer aircraft.
Mr. Bohn is survived by his wife, Georgina Castilione Bohn; daughter, Helena Bohn de Andrade; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Family and friends of Mr. Bohn are invited to a memorial service on Friday, March 31, 2023 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at:
