Claudia Ohana debut in the musical “Dom Quixote de Lugar Nenhum”, by Ruy Guerra, at Teatro Casa Grande in Rio de Janeiro.

Is man able to live without his dreams? This question goes in search of an answer in the musical “Dom Quixote de Lugar Não”, by Ruy Guerra, which, in the view of Jorge Farjalla, is being staged again at Teatro Casa Grande, sponsored by Instituto Cultural Vale.

Immersed in our Brazilianness, the show — inspired by the classic work of Cervantes — sings the saga of the hero Queixada (Lucas Leto) now through the interior of the Northeast and features a black actor like Don Quixote for the first time. There — or nowhere, as the title suggests — he starts a battle to transform his own world into a less sad space and still find the muse Dulcinea (Dani Fontan) he never knew.

The soul of Don Quixote, so utopian and idealistic in literature, will stir viewers' desires, according to the director. “'So, do you keep believing in the dream even when everything seems to be against it?' Are you a dreamer or not?' These are questions that are within all of us", says Farjalla, who casts Cláudia Ohana in the role of a restless devil. “She represents the feminine liberator. I dismembered the character of Sancho, who in Ruy's work was the devil, to bring an even greater duality to the story. This character acts in a place of conscience for Don Quixote. And it is also a tribute to her, Ruy's muse in and out of fiction”, explains Farjalla.

Claudia Ohana hasn't worked with Ruy since 1989 and confesses that she is living a unique experience on stage. “It's amazing to be back working on a text by him – it's been years, since the movie 'Kuarup'. And having songs by Zeca Baleiro, which I also love, is awesome. I've wanted to work with Farjalla for some time now. His process in rehearsals has brought me a lot of joy. We do everything as a group. It's the first time I'm on stage all the time, playing an instrument, changing characters. It has been quite special and transformative,” she says.

Interpreted by Lucas Leto, the hero Queixada faces a path of stones in this arid universe and has already arrived breaking barriers. “Making the first black Don Quixote took me by surprise and at the same time in a state of alert. It serves everyone to think that society is changing, but we are nowhere near what would be ideal in a racial context. Now, we see a great classic like Dom Quixote, which black artists could never access, being lived by me. It's a big responsibility because he's iconic and now he's going to be played by a young black actor from Salvador. At each rehearsal, I'm sure this show will surprise anyone who goes to see it and will move them a lot”, says the actor.

The montage, conceived by Simone Kontraluz, marks Farjalla's debut in musical theatre. “I always had a very strong connection with music. She has always guided my work, but now, for the first time, in a total way. When I received Simone's invitation, I thought a lot about bringing our Brazilianness to the stage, black people in the spotlight. In terms of language, I return to the baroque style, I also sign the costumes. In this montage, the choir gains greater strength and is present throughout the action. I was also looking for the completeness of Ruy Guerra’s works, his desire to hear them in the show”, says Farjalla, who currently directs the shows “Ana Carolina Canta Cássia Eller”, and “Vem Doce”, by Vanessa da Mata.

In this adaptation of Ruy Guerra, this Dom Quixote Queixada represents the uniqueness of each one of us in this eternal quest to ease the harshness of everyday life and transcend chaos. The storytellers of this story are materialized on stage as a troupe of acrobats, with 10 actors who sing and play instruments unfolding into various characters, to narrate in a great and fabulous string the adventures and misadventures of the protagonist and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza ( Daniel Moura). They are relentless in trying to make fantasy believable.

A former student of Ruy Guerra, photographer Simone Kontraluz has maintained a great friendship with the filmmaker for 20 years. It was during the pandemic, even more connected, that the idea of making a new montage of “Don Quixote from Nowhere” came up. “He turned 90. So I asked him what he wanted as a tribute. He told me about this show, which had been done by Edson Celulari years ago, and which had not turned out exactly as he would have liked. He spoke of wanting to see Quixote as a musical on stage, and that became my mission”, she says, who invited Zeca Baleiro to also work on these songs.

“Zeca was enchanted by the songs and the idea. I also thought that only Farjalla would do what Ruy wanted. And he also fell in love right away. We're in this crazy race with Ruy saying he could die at 90 and he's already turning 92 this year. Now, we have Quixote mounted and everyone is very happy, in deep love”- celebrates Simone.

The show, which brings new songs by Ruy Guerra and Zeca Baleiro, will be on display until the 27/07th, at Teatro Casa Grande, in the Leblon district, in Rio de Janeiro.

Just in the past few months, we've seen what Republicans have done with their power in the states:

  • In Tennessee, Republicans expelled two Black representatives for peacefully protesting gun violence, and in Montana, a trans lawmaker was silenced.
  • In North Carolina and South Carolina, Republicans jammed through some of the most restrictive abortion bans in the country.
  • In Florida, Ron DeSantis and Republicans have passed legislation attacking LGBTQ+ rights.

Virginia Republicans have already rolled back voting rights and proposed a budget that gives the ultra-wealthy a tax break.

If the GOP flips the state Senate and defends its control of the state House, abortion rights could be first up on the chopping block. Their far-right governor has already endorsed plans to threaten abortion doctors with jail time – it’s terrible.

With so much at stake this year, we can’t lose. This team has stepped up time and time again to power our mission, so we know you’ll come through this year, too.

Chip in $7 to heed President Obama’s call and help Democrats win in states like Virginia. Any amount will make an incredible difference. We mean it →

For two years, our Democratic majority in the state Senate has blocked much of Virginia Republicans' dangerous agenda, but we could lose a crucial check on the GOP’s power if we are defeated this November.

That’s why it means so much to know we have the support of this grassroots team. Thank you for everything.
