That all changed when I learned about plumbing and saw the strong women in this field. Continuing on that path was the best decision of my life because it led me to work as a plumber on the Obama Presidential Center construction site.
The effort to include the diverse Chicago community in this build has meant that people who look like me and come from backgrounds like mine were recruited and hired to work on an incredibly large-scale project that will have an impact for decades. I'm forever grateful for that opportunity.

The Obama Presidential Center is going to be such a great resource for the neighborhood. I know people will come to the Center not only because it has President Obama’s name on it, but because it will be a place where children can go after school and a place with resources for adults. I look forward to the day when I can say to my children, “Come, look what your mama did.”
Because of you, the Obama Presidential Center is going to be around to serve and provide for the community long after I'm gone. That means that my children, my grandchildren, my great-grandchildren, and even my great-great-grandchildren will visit the Center. And they’ll be able to say their grandma had a hand in building this.

 On September 15, 1963, members of the Klu Klux Klan planted 19 sticks of dynamite next to the stairwell of a church in Birmingham, Alabama — and four little girls lost their lives:
Denise McNair, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Addie Mae Collins.
Today, 60 years later, we take time to honor their lives and legacy.
It was this heinous attack that raised our nation’s collective consciousness to finally pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. It was a turning point in our history but it came at a great cost.
It’s hard not to see the parallels to today with political leaders stoking violence through hateful rhetoric and an effort to whitewash America’s racist history.
That’s why, here at The Collective PAC, we are choosing not only to remember these four girls as heroes of the Civil Rights movement but we are also using this day to find renewed strength to keep fighting for equal rights and equal representation.
