In less than two weeks, on March 24, the fair maps movement will once again be arguing in front of the U.S. Supreme Court in a case called Louisiana v. Callais.
 

A quick recap:

This case was born after an ideologically driven, conservative federal court wrongly struck down Louisiana’s newly enacted VRA-compliant map, ignoring U.S. Supreme Court precedent in Allen v. Milligan — which affirmed the equal opportunity for Black voters to elect candidates of their choice.

Our affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation (NRF), proudly supported some of the voters fighting to ensure that their voices would be heard and their rights protected.

That fight is now at the Supreme Court.
 

What the outcome of this case could mean:

This case will determine not only the future of Louisiana’s Voting Rights Act (VRA)-compliant congressional map, but also could impact the future of Section 2 of the VRA itself.

As A.G. Holder put it, “The current map provides equal representation for all voters in the state and must be maintained. A decision that does not recognize that fact or that weakens the Voting Rights Act of 1965 would signal an alarming retreat into a past that so many have fought so long and so hard to pull the country from. The eyes of the nation will be on the Court.”
