The Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA) was a landmark legislation that finally created a robust safeguard against discrimination and disenfranchisement in our elections and established strong tools to deliver on the promise of fair representation with fair district lines. For decades, the Voting Rights Act made a measurable impact in protecting the voting power of marginalized voters. But all that changed with the Supreme Court’s disastrous decision in Shelby County.
