Help the NDRC beat map-manipulating Republicans! Donate
Here's a look at what we're dealing with in 2020, Sula:
FIRST the Roberts/Kavanaugh Supreme Court barred the federal judiciary from putting guardrails on partisan gerrymandering. Help us win in the states instead >>
THEN former GOP Speakers Newt Gingrich, John Boehner, and Paul Ryan teamed up to throw their weight behind map manipulation. Help us stop them >>
AND Trump and the RNC have $195 million on hand, much of which will make its way to the down-ballot races we're working on. Help us beat their big money >>
NOW our first election of 2020 is just two weeks away, and we need your help! Pitch in to elect Democrats in Texas and our other target states >>
Republicans may be going all-out to save their manipulated maps, but this team has never backed down from a challenge. We need to raise $40,000 before Thursday's mid-month deadline to beat the GOP and secure fair maps in 2021. Will you donate now?

Sula -- NBC News is calling redistricting one of the most important battles in politics. And I have to agree.

Gerrymandering is alive and well. The coming battle will be bigger than ever. America's decennial congressional redistricting process -- when roughly even-sized House districts are drawn, usually by state politicians -- has become one of the most important battles in politics, as the parties seek to gain advantage by drawing sometimes crazy looking maps.

Help citizens win the battle >>
As Timm reports, gerrymandering is so effective that state lawmakers, who often function as the map drawers, can hand control of Congress to one party for a decade. North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Ohio are perfect examples -- in all three of these states, Republicans won more seats in 2018 even though the party received fewer votes state-wide.

Will you donate to the AOTL State Plan Fund to prevent another decade of gerrymandered maps?

The article pinpointed Texas, Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina as ripe for partisan gerrymandering in 2021. It's no coincidence those are four of All On The Line's target states.

Our state directors are building grassroots infrastructure at the local level to make sure we're ready for this battle. Can they count on your support to help provide volunteers with the resources they need to be successful? Chip in here.

AG Holder believes we can achieve fair maps with a strong grassroots effort -- but we will need to be much more engaged in the 2021 redistricting process than we were in 2011.

All On The Line
Our friends at the Center for American Progress (CAP) recently released a groundbreaking report that outlines the devastating impacts gerrymandering has had on efforts to reduce gun violence.

They focused on four states -- all of which are on our list of advocacy targets: North Carolina, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.

These are all states where Republicans won a majority of seats in the state legislature in the 2018 elections, despite Democrats winning a majority of the vote. But what does that mean once members elected by these gerrymandered maps take their seats? On the issue of gun violence prevention, the answer is clear: Obstruction.
  • North Carolina: With a homicide rate 16% above the national average, 58% of North Carolinians support stricter gun laws. But legislation to temporarily remove firearms from high-risk gun owners has stalled in a Senate committee as recently as 2019.
  • Michigan: Gun-related suicides hit the state at an alarmingly high rate with a Michigander taking their life with a firearm every 14 hours. Even though 64% of Michigan Republicans favor legislation that would remove firearms from high-risk gun owners, the Senate Majority Leader has failed to schedule a hearing.
  • Pennsylvania: The legislature has introduced a bill to expand background checks every session since 2013, but legislation has been stalled in the House Judiciary Committee.
  • Wisconsin: An August 2019 poll showed 80% of Wisconsinites support stronger gun laws. The governor called a special legislative session to address the issue in the fall, but the legislature ended the session less than one minute after it began.
There is a clear disconnect between voters, their priorities, and the elected officials charged with addressing them. It's why President Obama and AG Holder launched All On The Line -- to make our democracy work again. And it's why we send so many fundraising emails. Can you make a donation to help fund our plans to end gerrymandering and restore power to the people?

We know our plans can work. Just this week, Virginia's legislature began with gun reform as one of its top priorities. It's no coincidence that this is the first legislative session since Virginians voted using fair maps redrawn because a federal court threw out the old maps due to racial gerrymandering.

There is hope and there will be change.

Keep fighting,
The All On The Line Team

Gerrymandering is alive and well. The coming battle will be bigger than ever. Help us win
Here's the reality, Sula: 2020 is going to be tough.

After the Supreme Court ruled last year that federal courts could not put limits on partisan gerrymandering, we knew we had to take on map manipulators state by state.

But as of today, Republicans have total control of the redistricting process in states like North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, and Texas.

If we want fair redistricting, we must flip at least one legislative chamber in each of those states and more. Will you help make that happen? Chip in to our $40,000 mid-month goal >>

Your generous donation will go directly toward:
  • Identifying and investing in key races that will impact 2021 redistricting
  • Helping Democrats win in our nine target states
  • Responding to major legal decisions
  • And making sure voters know about the stakes in the 2020 elections
This is the last year to make a difference before redistricting. Don't wait -- pitch in to help us hit our $40,000 mid-month goal.

Daily Kos headline: If redistricting began today, Republicans would dominate.

Sula,
  • The Census Bureau just released its last official population estimates before the 2020 Census.
  • Texas, Florida, and North Carolina are almost certain to gain U.S. House seats in 2021.
  • But Republicans have complete control over the maps in these states!
Sula, if we can't break GOP control this yearRepublicans will be drawing the maps for what could be Texas' 39 House seats, Florida's 29, and North Carolina's 14 -- that's nearly 20 percent of the House!

We have to stop them from gerrymandering those seats. Will you chip in for fair maps in these three states and all of our 2020 targets?

In 2010, the GOP swept statehouses across the country and manipulated the maps for a decade. That's how we ended up with a House Republican Caucus that will stop at nothing to protect Donald Trump from accountability.

Now we run the risk of a repeat. Another decade of maps are on the ballot in 2020, and our first election (in Texas) is coming up at the end of the month. Don't wait -- donate now to help us ensure fairness in the next decade's worth of elections!

All On The Line
With the redistricting process less than a year away, All On The Line is already in full swing -- especially because 2020 is a census year. Here's what you need to know about the role that the census plays in redistricting.
→ The census is the foundation for redistricting. Without an accurate count, it will be impossible to create fair maps that truly represent the communities who live there.

→ The census count will determine how many congressional districts each state will have for the next decade. With 435 representatives total, that means states could gain or lose a district based on population changes.

→ The Supreme Court stopped the Trump administration's attempt to add a citizenship question to the census, but we expect that map manipulators will try to find new ways to suppress the power of certain communities in an attempt to maintain their own power.
We have a long road ahead in the fight for fair maps. All On The Line is committed to fighting to ensure communities across the country are fairly represented. Help fund this important work!
