President José Sarney and Ambassador Alves de Souza

Tribute to H.E. Ambassador Carlos Eduardo Alves de Souza

(September 21, 1933 – August 26, 2021)

On behalf of the Board of Directors of The Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce, we regretfully inform you of the passing, on August 26, 2021, of Ambassador Carlos Eduardo Alves de Souza.

Ambassador Alves de Souza was born on September 21, 1933, to Wladimir Alves de Souza and Maria Adélia in Rio de Janeiro.

His diplomatic career spanned more than 40 years and many different countries. He served as Ambassador of Brazil to the Czech Republic, Paraguay, and Switzerland. He also held several senior positions in Brasília, including the Office of the President in 1985. Ambassador Alves de Souza served as Consul General of Brazil in New York between 1981 and 1984. His interaction with the Chamber strengthened ties between Brazil and the United States and furthered the Chamber’s mission of promoting trade and investment between the two nations. He retired in 2001 to Rio de Janeiro and focused on his family, friends, golf, and his beloved soccer team, Flamengo.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Ambassador Carlos Eduardo Alves de Souza as we mourn his passing.

Say you live in a state like North Carolina or Texas, where recent population growth is driven largely by an influx of people of color and Democrats. It's time for a once-in-a-decade reworking of district maps -- but instead of drawing maps to empower the communities that have driven the growth, Republicans draw the maps to give themselves more political power instead.

That's exactly what could happen if you don't fight back right now.

NBC News recently ran a headline that said: NBC:Gerrymandering could limit minority voters' power even though Census shows population gains

In Texas, people of color, who tend to vote for Democrats, make up 95% of the population growth recorded in the 2020 Census. NDRC President Kelly Burton plainly told Axios that “There’s simply no way for them to add two more GOP [House] seats in Texas without racially gerrymandering based on this census data.”

And North Carolina, which is gaining a House seat because more people of color -- who, again, tend to vote for Democrats -- have moved to the state, could actually lose Democratic representation if Republicans have their way.

Gerrymandering silences the voices of communities of color. It's a form of voter suppression. And we must END it.

It won't be easy to stop Republicans in states like North Carolina and Texas who want to manipulate the maps for their benefit. But we have to fight with everything we've got. Can you chip in to help us take on Republican power-stealers across the country?

A.G. Holder: If the NDRC is successful in undoing manipulated maps, we will be able to achieve a system in which everyone's vote counts.
Since 2017, the NDRC has executed a comprehensive redistricting strategy that shifts the redistricting power, creating fair districts where Democrats can compete. Our victories have been made possible by our strong community of grassroots supporters.
