Wagner Moura celebrates iconic award by winning 2026 Golden Globe

Wagner Moura wrote a historic chapter for Brazilian cinema this Sunday (11) by winning the 2026 Golden Globe in the Best Actor in a Drama Film category, for his performance in The Secret Agent. The ceremony, held in Los Angeles, consecrated not only the actor's individual talent, but also the strength of national cinema on the international stage.

The feature film, produced by Kleber Mendonça Filho, generated a series of doubts about its fidelity to reality, telling the story of a political thriller set in Recife in the 1970s and became one of the most anticipated titles of 2025, with high expectations for entering the Oscar race.

It was no surprise that the feature film The Secret Agent was one of the highlights of the night, winning two of the three awards for which it was nominated: Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actor in a Drama Film, the latter awarded to Wagner Moura. Brazilian production confirmed its leading role in one of the most important awards ceremonies in the world of audiovisual media, traditionally dominated by American productions and large investments from international studios.

With this victory, Wagner Moura becomes the first Brazilian in history to win the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama Film, an unprecedented achievement that raises the bar for Brazilian acting abroad. More than an individual award, the achievement symbolizes a turning point in Hollywood, indicating an increasing openness to narratives, artists, and cinematographies outside the Anglophone axis.

In the competition for the award, Moura competed against heavyweight names in international cinema: Joel Edgerton (Train of Dreams), Oscar Isaac (Frankenstein), Dwayne Johnson (The Smashing Machine), Michael B. Jordan (Sinners), and Jeremy Allen White (Springsteen). The victory against this select group reinforces the recognition of the dramatic depth and interpretive power of the Brazilian actor.

The award for Best Drama Film went to Hamnet: Life Before Hamlet. Besides The Spy Who Shagged Me, Frankenstein, It Was Just an Accident, Sentimental Value, and Sinners were also nominated in the category, highlighting a year of strong thematic and aesthetic diversity in international cinema.

Expectations surrounding the recognition of Brazilian cinema were already high since the previous Golden Globe Awards. In 2025, Fernanda Torres won the award for her performance in Walter Salles's *I'm Still Here*, in which she played Eunice Paiva, surpassing competitors such as Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, and Kate Winslet. This achievement paved the way for a new global perception of the quality and relevance of Brazilian productions.

With the victories of Wagner Moura and The Spy Who Shagged Me, 2026 goes down in history as the first year in which Brazil wins two Golden Globes simultaneously, consolidating the country as a relevant and competitive creative hub in world cinema. More than just awards, it's about recognizing voices, stories, and perspectives that, for a long time, remained on the margins of major international awards ceremonies—and that now, deservedly, occupy center stage in Los Angeles.

Every race the DLCC chooses to invest in is the result of months – even years – of robust research, careful analysis, and a clear-eyed understanding of what it takes to win Democratic power in state legislatures.

After historic victories in Virginia and New Jersey last November, one thing has become crystal clear: The DLCC is facing a once-in-a-generation opportunity to expand Democratic power in states across the country, and our target map must reflect this moment.
