Late Modernist Stages: Grupo Forja and the Workers’ Theatre on the Outskirts of São Paulo (1979-1985)

March 30 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

The Brazil Brown Bag Seminar Series invites you to its discussion titled, “Late Modernist Stages: Grupo Forja and the Workers’ Theatre on the Outskirts of São Paulo (1979-1985)” with Eduardo Luís Campos Lima, Fulbright Visiting Research Student, ILAS, Columbia University and PhD Student at University of São Paulo (Modern Languages Department).

In the final years of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1985), the industrial outskirts of the city of Sao Paulo were a cauldron of new political ideas. The region saw the emergence of several popular theatre groups, which drew their social views from a wide range of rising trends – from Liberation Theology to the new labor movement. The most important troupe was Teatro Forja, created as a theatrical branch of the Metalworkers Union of Sao Bernardo do Campo. The confluence of workers with a rural background, activists of new political strands and formally trained artists resulted in a late blooming of Latin American Popular Theatre in poor neighborhoods of the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo. Campos Lima’s goal is to discuss the aesthetic and political perspectives of this theatrical movement.

Eduardo Luís Campos Lima holds a degree in Journalism and a MA in American and Brazilian dramaturgy (both from Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil). Among his publications is the book Coisas de Jornal no Teatro (Expressão Popular: São Paulo, 2014), about the Living Newspaper theatre in the United States and in Brazil. He is currently a PhD student at Universidade de São Paulo and a Fulbright Visiting Research Student at Columbia University.
