Dr. Maxwell Medeiros Dantas receives the CBTUR VIP Award

Collaboration

Last January 25th, Dr. Diego Maxwell Medeiros Dantas received, together with his wife Dayse Karine Ribeiro de Oliveira and his daughter Nicolle Ribeiro Medeiros, the CBTUR VIP Award, which was held on the 468th Anniversary of the city of São Paulo.

The event was held at the Hotel Sol Alphaville, and the featured category was “lawyers”.

The event organized by Tourism Brazilian Chamber  took place in Alphaville and honored personalities on the 458th anniversary of São Paulo. Dr. Diego is a China representative in Brazil and will be a member of the VIP Show “Lei de Fato” program.

___________________________

- Our schedule is jampacked this month. We've got major program developments in every single one of our target states. Take a look:
  • North Carolina: Our first ever online course was launched in the Tar Heel State. Students can navigate the course at their own pace to learn about the state's redistricting process and the history of map manipulation in North Carolina.
  • Colorado: Lights, camera, organizing. We'll be hosting virtual screenings this month of "Slay the Dragon," a documentary focused on citizen-led movements battling gerrymandering. We'll be following up on the viewings with a live-panel discussion.
  • Arizona: The application process to become a commissioner on the state's independent redistricting commission is fast-approaching so we're hosting multiple info sessions this month to teach advocates whether they meet state qualifications and how to apply.

Ok, time for a breather. You hear from us all the time how much work we have to do in our target states and how we must take a localized approach to secure fair maps in 2021. Well, we take a localized approach for our fundraising too -- it's why this month, we've set a goal of 100 $1 contributions in New York to help fund our localized organizing programs.

But hey, we said every target state. So, take a look at what else is going on if you're not convinced yet:
  • Wisconsin: After conservative courts and gerrymandered legislatures forced voters to choose between their health and vote in last month's election, we sent voters a survey to learn more about the obstacles they faced and how we can prevent this disaster happening from across the county in November's election.
  • Ohio: This month All On The Line deployed its advocacy tool to ask our supporters to contact legislators to demand election reform in Ohio -- because no voter should be forced to choose between exercising their right to vote and protecting their health.
  • Georgia: Gerrymandering has worked in tandem with voter suppression in Georgia to suppress the vote in African American communities. We joined Georgia NAACP President James Woodall and Black Male Voter Project founder Mondale Robinson to dive into this topic with supporters
  • Texas: The state's Supreme Court and Attorney General are battling on whether all voters will be able to vote absentee to help maintain social distancing. We're hosting a webinar with partners to give the latest guidance to voters on how to cut through all the news and make their voices heard in the upcoming election.
  • Florida: Our AOTL Florida State Director hosted a supporter call to update supporters about where Florida is in the redistricting process and what changes we are implementing due to COVID19 as well as a targeted Redistricting U with some of our best partners' leaders.
  • Pennsylvania: Thanks to recent election reforms, registered voters can now request mail-in-ballots without a reason. We messaged all of our Pennsylvania supporters this month with links to request ballots and a directory of county election officials.
It's a lot, Sula. We're able to build such a robust programming slate because we have such a robust donor base -- but it takes sustained investment, month after month, from donors across the country. Can you get a start on preparing next month's slate by helping us reach 100 $1 donations in New York before Sunday night?

Thanks for reading and bringing this national campaign to life!

In the world of 10-year redistricting cycles, there are endless highs and lows. And the last few weeks have been a perfect example.

High & Low: Alabama »

A highlight in Alabama became a devastating blow when the Supreme Court decided a gerrymandered congressional map -- that a federal court deemed discriminatory -- could be used in the 2022 midterm elections.

As A.G. Holder said, this “ill founded decision by SCOTUS will force voting to proceed with a map that’s a “textbook violation of the Voting Rights Act.”

Moments like this are a good reminder that as the fight against gerrymandering continues, every win and loss has real impact behind it. Will you help support All On The Line as we fight for fair maps?

High: North Carolina »

After Republicans in North Carolina tried to manufacture advantages for their party, voters challenged the gerrymandered maps in court. Last week, the NC Supreme Court struck down both the legislative AND congressional maps!

But we knew we couldn’t take this win for granted -- within hours, our North Carolina team had planned a rapid response meeting and started reaching out to thousands of local volunteers.

A.G. Holder said it best -- “Republicans “underestimated the tenacity of North Carolinians and our preparedness to fight for the right to vote in free and fair elections.”

North Carolina isn’t the only state where voters have sent map drawers back to the drawing board. We need the help of grassroots donors to make sure we can mobilize voters during redraws. Make a donation!

High: Ohio »

Ohio voters overwhelmingly supported redistricting reforms to curb partisan gerrymandering. So when new maps unfairly tipped the scales toward Republicans, voters challenged the maps in court and won!

After Republicans made what A.G. Holder called “inconsequential revisions” to the legislative maps during a court-ordered redraw, the Ohio Supreme Court deemed those maps unconstitutional -- again!

The state of play changes every day in Ohio, but one thing remains unchanged -- Ohio voters are committed to fair maps and we are committed to supporting them in any way we can. You can help make sure AOTL is able to provide voters with support by making a donation.

High: Florida »

Governor DeSantis ousted contenders like Georgia’s Governor Kemp and Ohio’s Governor DeWine for the most egregious map manipulation attempt by a sitting governor -- by trying to hijack the redistricting process AND get the FL Supreme Court to pre-emptively approve the blueprint for his discriminatory map.

Luckily this week, the Florida Supreme Court denied DeSantis’s unprecedented request. The fight for fair maps isn’t over in Florida -- but this was a big win for fair map advocates! Help AOTL secure wins for fair maps by supporting our work.

The redistricting landscape is changing every day. When we entered the height of this process, A.G. Holder reminded us that we’re at a critical junction. He said that our collective actions during this time could be the difference between voters being able to fairly elect leaders who represent their interests -- or another decade of obstruction.

“Republicans in state legislatures and the United States Congress are depriving lots of Americans of the protection and power that come with casting a ballot.” HELP US STOP RIGHT-WING RADICALS →

There is a wide-scale attack on voting rights. But not all hope is lost. A.G. Holder said the fight for our democracy is not over yet.

“There is still time to stop this conservative backlash to an electorate that has already soundly rejected their politics, but we could use your help to fight back.” -- A.G. Holder

President Obama and A.G. Holder said it best, so we’ll let their words speak for themselves:
President Obama recently said: Together, we’ve accomplished so much during this redistricting cycle... Because you helped us fight for fair maps, Democrats were able to prevent Republican legislatures across the country from tilting maps in their favor. But [that] doesn’t mean we can relax.
And A.G. Holder said: I'm asking you to stay in the fight with us.
President Obama: 'With swing states like Florida still in the midst of contentious redistricting battles, we need your help.'
Sula -- will you answer their call and chip in now to help us keep fighting?

Sula, a recent op-ed in The Washington Post perfectly captures the problem with gerrymandering:

“The nation’s policies are determined not by median voters … but by electorates that have been artificially skewed district by district. Parties that gerrymander can more easily impose radical ideologies, spurn compromise and ignore the majority’s wishes.”

We’ve made tremendous progress throughout this redistricting cycle, but unfortunately there are still states where Republicans have passed gerrymandered maps into law – which is why it’s crucial that the NDRC and our affiliates are able to keep up the fight on the ground and in the courts.

Pitch in to help the NDRC end gerrymandering
and protect our democracy!

What’s at stake here is nothing less than our democracy itself. All you have to do is take a look at some of the data detailed in another recent Post piece to see just how bad some of the latest Republican gerrymanders are:

“[North Carolina] Republicans could win 71 percent of the state’s congressional seats with only 48 percent of the statewide vote… Texas Democrats would have to win 58 percent of the vote to be favored to carry more than 37 percent of the state’s congressional seats.”

North Carolina and Texas vote share vs. Congressional seats

We’re working around the clock to bring an end to gerrymandering once and for all – but we need your help to keep going!

As Republicans continue to “aggressively” gerrymander, election experts confirmed they expect to see a decline in competitive elections.

The fight for fair maps isn’t over yet -- almost a dozen states have not yet finalized their congressional district lines and voters in states like Ohio and North Carolina forced redraws of gerrymandered maps. Help secure more fair map wins by supporting All On The Line.

Brennan Center for Justice: “Competition is one of the big victims of this round of redistricting.”

Washington Post: “Many state legislatures are approving maps that eliminate competition in favor of more solidly Republican or Democratic districts.”

New York Times: “The number of competitive congressional districts is on track to dive near -- and possibly below -- the lowest level in at least three decades… fewer than 40 seats out of 435.”

Competitive districts are the foundation of our democracy. They ensure neither party becomes too extreme or polarized. We cannot allow this trend of eliminating swing districts to go unchecked.

That’s why voters are holding map drawers accountable by challenging partisan gerrymandered maps in court. And so far, voters in Ohio and North Carolina have won -- sending map drawers back to the drawing board!

With two of our target states in the midst of a redraw, we’re asking for the support of our grassroots donors. Can you chip in $15 today?

All On The Line
The fight for fair maps is a fight for the future of our nation.

If we lose this fight, map manipulators across the country will become even more emboldened to trample on our country's core democratic principles. That's why we can't lose this fight.

We're committed to building a movement that's funded by supporters across the country. That's why we set a goal of 100 one-dollar donations from each state by Sunday at midnight. Can we count on you to be one of the 38 people we still need from New York?

Sula, the American people deserve to be represented by elected officials who acknowledge their constituents, listen to their concerns, and hold themselves accountable. Instead -- map manipulation allows our elected leaders to shut their constituents out of the political process without any accountability.

We cannot afford to be a country that cedes our collective power to a sliver of extreme, partisan legislators that treat our democracy as a game. Take a stand and donate just $1 by tomorrow at midnight to help us win this fight.

We couldn't ask for a better partner than you in the fight for fair maps. Thanks, Sula.
