Their decision in Shelby spurred states with a history of discriminatory voting practices to immediately pass new laws restricting the right to vote. And now they may be coming after another section of the Voting Rights Act: “Federal judges threw out Alabama’s map in the spring, but it was reinstated for 2022 by the Supreme Court, which ruled 5-4 that it was too close to the election to draw a new map. A federal judge in Georgia wrote in another case that the state’s map may violate the Voting Rights Act while letting it stand for 2022...” — POLITICO And Sula, this is only the beginning. Harper, a case involving "independent state legislature" theory – a fringe, right-wing legal argument that could make state legislatures the sole authority over all manner of election laws. Overturning Roe showed just how extreme the Court has become – its ultra-conservative majority is willing to overlook decades of precedent while answering to a partisan, right-wing agenda over the Constitution.
