The new version of THE BOYS IN THE BAND reaffirms
diversity by bringing up pertinent discussions.
After five
decades, the new version of The Boys in The Band has everything to become a
milestone in the history of Brazilian theater, bringing to light pertinent
discussions and exposing the need for respect and acceptance towards the
LGBTQIA+ community. And, above all, showing that theater is alive and vigilant,
ready to respond to the challenges and demands of contemporary society.
In order to
find women available to produce this new version of the play, producer Zuza
Ribeiro, after a long search, managed to bring together a talented team who
bring a new vision to the work.
The proposal,
written by Mart Crowley, was originally performed in 1968 and made a huge
impact at the time. It is a raw and honest portrait of male homosexuality,
addressing issues such as the search for acceptance, the fear of rejection and
the fight against oppression. Through humor and irony, the work shows the
reality of a group of gay friends who get together to celebrate the birthday of
one of them.
The cast is
made up of a group of talented actors, who bring complex and layered characters
to life.
The new
production brings a feminine perspective to the work, highlighting aspects that
would perhaps go unnoticed in a version directed only by men. They sensitively
explore the relationships between the characters, highlighting the nuances and
conflicts present in each of them. Furthermore, the new proposal focuses on a
minimalist aesthetic, with simple sets and costumes, focusing on the strength
of interpretations and the strength of the words in the text.
The show
features a mentor, Caio Evangelista, responsible for transposing the version of
the text into Portuguese. Caio also enters the scene as an actor in the role of
Lary. In addition to him, the cast includes Tiago Barbosa, Caio Páduan, Otávio
Martins, Leonardo Miggiorin and Gabriel Santana.
The partnership of Caio Evangelista and Zuza
Ribeiro in the play The Boys in The Band kickstarts the production of
meaningful and inclusive shows, which already has other tricks up its sleeve
for audiovisual and theater productions, but they keep it secret. '
The duo's
objective is to produce definitive and significant achievements that help
society develop and become more human.
The artistic
direction of the show is by Ricardo Grassom and Heitor Garcia.
The Procópio
Ferreira Theater, one of the most renowned stages in the city, enthusiastically
welcomed this new version directed by women, promising to move people and
provoke deep reflections. It is a show that cannot be ignored, as it brings to
light urgent and necessary themes. Therefore, we invite everyone to attend this
play, which will certainly be a milestone in the country's theatrical history.
The
production of the play has been intense and challenging, but the team is
determined to bring a show that goes beyond entertainment, that provokes
reflection, raises awareness and strengthens the fight for equality and
LGBTQIA+ rights. Furthermore, the choice of a team made up entirely of women
reinforces Zuza Ribeiro's commitment to female representation in theater.
With the
combination of the talent of the directors, the engagement of the cast and the
dedication of the production team, the new version of The Boys in The Band
promises to move, impact and bring about changes in the hearts and minds of the
public, in the midst of a time when Brazil seeks to reaffirm its diversity and
face the barriers imposed by the conservative wave.
