At any point in the next few months, the U.S. Supreme Court will issue a decision in Louisiana v. Callais — a case that will determine the future of Louisiana’s congressional map as well as the future of critical protections under the Voting Rights Act (VRA).
Below is a quick overview to bring you up to date on the fight for voting rights in Louisiana. Please take a moment to get up to speed and make a donation to support All On The Line’s critical work to protect fair maps and voting rights.

• For nearly 30 years, Black voters in Louisiana had to contend with a congressional map that prevented them from electing a candidate of their choice in all but one of the state’s six congressional districts, in a textbook violation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
• Multiple federal courts saw it as such, and with support from our affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation (NRF), Louisiana voters successfully challenged that gerrymandered map in court. The state legislature enacted a VRA-compliant map in January 2024, which is currently in place and includes two Black-opportunity districts.
• A conservative federal court wrongly struck down Louisiana’s newly enacted VRA-compliant map, ignoring recent U.S. Supreme Court precedent in Allen v. Milligan (another case in which our affiliate, the NRF, played a central role) — which requires Louisiana to have a map with two congressional districts where voters can be equally heard.
• Our affiliate, the NRF, provided financial support and litigation strategy throughout the court processes in Louisiana. In March, the fair maps movement went before the U.S. Supreme Court, making the case for why the current map — which provides equal representation for all voters — must be kept in place. The NRF submitted a brief asking the Court to protect Louisiana’s VRA-compliant map.
When the Court issues a ruling in the days ahead, it will either uphold a fair map, safeguard representative redistricting, and foster a healthy democracy — or it will undermine essential voting rights in Louisiana and nationwide.

Hi there! We wanted to catch you as you sip your morning coffee… We’re facing upcoming special elections nationwide. Our team is working to give our candidates the resources they need to win and lay the groundwork for must-win races this fall. But just like you may need a morning caffeine boost, state Democrats also need a boost to fend off MAGA billionaires like Elon Musk, who supported groups that spent over $20 million to back the Trump-endorsed candidate in Wisconsin’s supreme court race.
With smaller staffs, budgets, and constituencies, your donation goes the furthest at the state legislative ballot level – your contribution could even mean the difference between a Democratic victory or loss. If every Democrat reading this email chipped in $5, we could compete with the millions of dollars that MAGA extremists are spending in state races and stop them in their tracks. Enjoy the rest of your day, Team DLCC |
