Republicans have invested over $2 million in get-out-the-vote efforts ahead of this November’s elections in New Jersey and Virginia because they know that every single seat matters – and that turning out even a handful of Republican voters could give them a victory. Democrats hold an ultra-narrow majority in the VA House – just 975 votes decided the chamber in 2023, and this fall’s elections are shaping up to be ultra-competitive. That’s why we must get back on track to hit our end-of-quarter goal. A Michigan school district said its campuses will be closed Monday following a deadly shooting and fire that left at least four dead and eight injured after a gunman attacked a church service on Sunday.
Grand Blanc Community Schools System said all of its campuses will be closed Monday following the attack on a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints service. The closure includes all 13 campuses, ranging from pre-school to high school.
In addition to the four dead and eight injured at the church, the shooter was killed by police.
Authorities say the 40-year-old suspect, Thomas Jacob Sanford, rammed his vehicle through the front doors of the church in Grand Blanc Township, about 60 miles northwest of Detroit, before exiting and opening fire with what they described as an assault rifle on the hundreds of worshippers inside.
Investigators believe the suspect also deliberately set fire to the church, which appeared engulfed in flames in photos and videos shared on social media.Ilhas brasileiras: estudo revela presença de espécies exclusivas

O estudo Escalas de Endemismo Marinho em Ilhas Oceânicas e o Endemismo Provincial-Insular, publicado nesta quarta-feira (10) pela plataforma científica Peer Community Journal, destaca a presença massiva de espécies exclusivas e de grande relevância para a ciência nas ilhas oceânicas brasileiras.
“O trabalho de campo tem contribuído para um levantamento mais apurado da nossa biodiversidade. Temos encontrado e descritos muitas novas espécies que são endêmicas, exclusivas das nossas ilhas. E, com isso, a gente observa que as ilhas brasileiras têm uma importância mundial muito grande em relação à proporção dessas espécies endêmicas”, explica o pesquisador da Rede de Especialistas em Conservação da Natureza (RECN), Hudson Pinheiro, que liderou o estudo.Giant Amazon Trees Can Help Scientists Tackle Climate Change
The majestic South American Dinizia excelsa can surpass 80 m in height.
An enormous capacity to capture carbon dioxide, a vital role in the distribution of rainfall, and the ability to register the cycles of the Amazon – these are some of the services provided by the giant trees of North Brazil, especially the red angelim – Dinizia excelsa – a species that can grow to be over 80 meters tall.
The presence of its specimens in the Amazon forest was documented recently. The first giant trees were found in 2019. In 2022, an 88.5-meter-tall red angelim tree – equivalent to a 30-story building – was revealed to be the largest tree in Brazil, located in the municipality of Almeirim, Pará state.
In total, 20 specimens over 70 meters tall were spotted in an area stretching along the Jari river, on the border between the states of Pará and Amapá. The scientist who made the discovery immediately began studies to better understand the conditions that led to its growth and gauge its full potential.
