The Alma da Rua Gallery,
located in one of the most emblematic addresses in São Paulo, Beco do Batman,
presents, starting November 29th, a solo exhibition by Mari Pavanelli. Titled
“Between Affection and Absence,” the show features a series of previously unseen
works. These canvases, through her unmistakable style, depict female figures
representing feelings that inhabit her in different spheres, as she explains:
“In the female figures I portray, there is introspection, melancholy, and
strength. They are not portraits of other women, but of internal states, of
presences that inhabit me. There is a sad sweetness in them, a calm beauty, and
an emotional density that invites the viewer to linger.”
Mari explains that these works address a learning process about latent marks
that permeate her existence. “It’s not about healing, but my paintings speak
about this process: that of gently rebuilding oneself, of learning to be whole
even in pieces, of transforming silence into living matter,” she reveals. In
this universe where there is an encounter between silence—not empty, but
welcoming—Pavanelli creates the narrative of her creations and understands
them, in a space between presence and absence, as places of pause, memory, and
reconnection.
Thus, the work “The Floor of Shards” is a powerful reminder of a past lived in the countryside, in dialogue with her reality, in a metaphor for herself, in her words: “like a person who has already lost, who has already broken, but who continues to rebuild.” Painting, for her, means a process of feeling and remembering, of gathering what has been scattered and giving form to what has broken, with everything always connected and interconnected to her existential perception. “My work stems from what surrounds me and permeates me. Especially the relationship with my home, my body, and the plants I cultivate, which become extensions of each other. It is the body as dwelling and the house as body.”
These elements appear in the
works not only as symbols, but as living presences, witnessing time, care, and
affection. Thus, the exhibition “'Between Affection and Absence' is about
remaining, about recognizing that it is possible to flourish, even when
everything seems to have broken,” concludes Mari Pavanelli.
