UPDATE: The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled against Madison Cawthorn and held that the 14th Amendment can be used to disqualify insurrectionists and those who gave them "aid and comfort" from office!

This is terrible news for anyone who could be potentially implicated in the events of January 6th – like Doug Mastriano, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Paul Gosar, and of course, Donald Trump.

That’s not all – over 600 state Republican legislators were complicit in the lead-up to the January 6th insurrection, either through spreading misinformation, encouraging overturning the presidential election results or by being at the “Stop the Steal” rally – which means they could be next.

But this ruling could be tested by the Supreme Court – so we're polling local Democrats for their opinion.

Do you think insurrectionists should be banned from running for office?

Republican lawmakers have spent more than a YEAR downplaying the violence of that day and Trump's involvement – but the federal court's ruling means that the people responsible for inciting terrible violence on January 6th, 2021 can still be held accountable.

Still, this ruling could be further challenged in court by going all the way to the conservative-leaning Supreme Court.

So before this goes any further, please let us know if you think insurrectionists should be banned from running for office >>

Sula, despite the fact that most voters in most states support reproductive freedom, more than half of all states have either already banned abortion or are poised to severely limit abortion access:

"[A] majority of the public in about 40 states supports legal abortion rights. … [But] analysis of polling data suggests that more Americans will live under an abortion policy that is out of step with their preferences, with consequences for democratic representation.”
– The Washington Post

You might be wondering how lawmakers in so many states can get away with passing draconian laws most of their constituents don’t want. Unfortunately, the answer is simple: Gerrymandering.

At the NDRC, we’re working to return power to voters by fighting for fair maps and electing leaders who will defend democracy. Will you pitch in now to support our work to end GOP gerrymandering?

Because of gerrymandering, Republicans in swing states have been able to win a majority of state legislative seats while earning only a minority of votes. This gives the GOP power to pass far-right legislation while shielding them from consequences at the ballot box.

That’s why the NDRC is fighting back to defend our democracy. We’ve targeted races in 17 states across the country that will have an impact on the future of fair maps. If we can win these races, we can achieve a future where a majority of voters once again have the power to shape policy in their states – including policy on abortion rights.

There are dozens of races and so much other work where we need to make investments, which means we’ll need a lot of resources. Can the NDRC count on your support to help power all our critical work?

Thank you so much,

Team NDRC

The president of one of the biggest anti-choice groups in the country, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America just issued a chilling warning in Axios:

Her group will work to ban abortion “in every state and in every legislature, including Congress.” It’s what she’s calling “the culmination of almost 50 years of work.”

Last month’s Supreme Court verdict was the result of DECADES of groundwork by anti-choice activists. So now, it’s up to grassroots activists like you to stand together and fight for our rights.

The DLCC is committed to electing Democrats to state legislatures to save abortion access – they’re now our last line of defense against anti-choice Republicans. But we need to fight back harder than ever.

So we’re asking: Will you chip in $7 or anything you can right away to support the DLCC and help elect more state Democrats who are champions for abortion rights and reproductive healthcare?

This anti-abortion group is notorious for its ties to many top Republicans, including Donald Trump and Mike Pence. The network of GOP power won’t waste any time or spare any resources fighting for state-by-state abortion bans. In fact, they are already scheming with state Republicans to do exactly that, now that the most conservative Supreme Court in modern history has given them the green light to destroy abortion rights.

With state legislatures being our last line of defense against anti-abortion rights legislation, we need your support more than ever. Please chip in whatever you can right away to power candidates who are committed to protecting and expanding abortion rights.

Thanks for being in this fight,

The Supreme Court has chipped away at the Voting Rights Act for 9 years. The diminished Voting Rights Act has already played a key role in the 2022 elections via redistricting. — POLITICO | The time to protect voting rights is now. DONATE TO THE NDRC

Sula,

The Supreme Court’s relentless attacks on voting rights are already having a tangible impact on our democracy. Their decision in Shelby spurred states with a history of discriminatory voting practices to immediately pass new laws restricting the right to vote. And now they may be coming after another section of the Voting Rights Act:

“Federal judges threw out Alabama’s map in the spring, but it was reinstated for 2022 by the Supreme Court, which ruled 5-4 that it was too close to the election to draw a new map. A federal judge in Georgia wrote in another case that the state’s map may violate the Voting Rights Act while letting it stand for 2022...”

— POLITICO

And Sula, this is only the beginning. If we don’t dig in our heels and fight with everything we’ve got to defend the right to vote and end GOP gerrymandering, our democracy is in serious trouble.

That’s why we’ve been working furiously to support Democrats running for office in districts and states on our list of Democracy Targets. So far, we’re targeting races in 17 states across the country, including state House seats, governor’s seats, secretary of state seats, and more. And that’s just one part of our plan!

We’ve been doing this work for years, and we’ve got a winning strategy — but we’re counting on supporters like you to help us keep going every step of the way. And with the midterms approaching fast, time is running short!

If you can, please make a donation of any amount to the NDRC today and help us defend voting rights, end GOP gerrymandering, and preserve our democracy:

The ultra-conservative SCOTUS majority isn't done wreaking havoc on our democracy. The Court just announced they’re taking up Moore v. Harper, a case involving "independent state legislature" theory – a fringe, right-wing legal argument that could make state legislatures the sole authority over all manner of election laws.

Overturning Roe showed just how extreme the Court has become – its ultra-conservative majority is willing to overlook decades of precedent while answering to a partisan, right-wing agenda over the Constitution. We need to be prepared.

If state legislatures are given sole power over our elections, we need to be sure that leadership reflects our values, and supports free and fair elections. To do this, we need to come together to grow our Democratic power in state legislatures across the country. It's the only way to protect our democracy from a potentially hostile SCOTUS ruling.

It’s vital that we lay the groundwork now to elect state Democrats this fall to protect our democracy from right-wing attacks. Will you chip in $7 right now to help fuel our grassroots movement to elect pro-democracy Democrats to state legislatures across the country?

Over the last term, SCOTUS managed to repeal gun safety measures, undermine the EPA’s power, and ignore nearly half a century of precedent to overturn Roe v. Wade.

They’re leaving our rights, our safety, and our freedoms up to individual states, knowing Republicans have spent decades building power in state legislatures.

Growing our Democratic power is our best chance at defending the states against right-wing extremism – we need strong Democrats in state legislatures across the country who will fight to protect our democracy, our values, and our hard-won progress.

Can you chip in $7, $25 or whatever you can budget right now to help build Democratic power in state legislatures across the country to defend our democracy against a hostile SCOTUS?

Together,
DLCC Team
