Bebel Gilberto
September 3 @ 8:00 PM
City Winery

The multi-Grammy-nominated Bebel Gilberto's latest album, Tudo, which means “everything” in English, showcases Bebel’s ethereal vocals and wistful, dreamy song writing in each of the CD’s 12 tracks. Bebel splits her time between Rio de Janeiro and New York City; she’s exquisitely synthesized musical influences from both cities in every track. Bebel’s sultry tonality is constant throughout Tudo as are the warm and playful Brazilian rhythms that include wood bongos and shakers. The gorgeous melodies are shaped by touches of electronica, and Bebel’s intimate vocals hint at a fantastical Rio de Janeiro.

Beatriz Bracher’s novel I Didn’t Talk represents the English-language debut of a master stylist: a compassionate but relentless novel about the long, dark harvest of Brazil’s totalitarian rule. As a professor prepares to retire from São Paulo to the countryside, it isn’t the urban violence he’s fleeing: what he fears most is the violence of his memory.

Organizing for Action

Think about something with me for a second:

It's been 53 years since the Voting Rights Act became law, strengthening our democracy and ensuring that every American could exercise their right to vote.

That might seem like a long time, but when you think about our country's history, it's really not long at all: Just a few decades since all those brave men and women -- knowing they'd be intimidated, turned away, or even beaten -- stood up to fight for their right to cast a ballot anyway.

These courageous leaders didn't lead that movement for themselves alone. They led it for future generations, too. They led it for us.

Now, it's our turn. We need to honor their legacy. We need to continue their work. And that's why I'm reaching out to you today, Sula:

I want you to join me and When We All Vote, my new initiative to make sure every eligible American casts their vote on Election Day.

The right to vote is the most powerful tool we have to make our voices heard as citizens. And if we want to keep this movement alive, it's up to us to make sure everyone exercises that right in November.

There are so many ways you can help When We All Vote in this final push before Election Day:

Host an event in your neighborhood to register voters. Train your friends on how to spread the word to others. Fire folks up to do their part in our democracy. Talk to everyone you know.

There's too much at stake this year to sit it out, Sula.

Join me on the When We All Vote team -- and say you're ready to get to work:

I'm in

Thank you,

Michelle Obama

Organizing for Action

If we're going to make the biggest impact we can, we need to make sure our friends and neighbors are ready to take action on all of the issues they support.

You're one of our most active supporters -- and coming up soon, there's a unique way you can help:

This fall, we are providing a five-part training series known as the Campaign Organizing Bootcamp. These trainings will prepare volunteers to: share their personal story, have persuasive conversations with voters, engage potential voters and get out the vote, manage staging locations for volunteer events, and organize communities through digital platforms.

We know that every community has its own organizing needs. That is why we need you to select a training that is relevant to your community, and teach it to volunteers in the most effective way -- face-to-face.

Join OFA volunteers nationwide and host your own Campaign Organizing Bootcamp on Sept. 22. Tell us you're interested, and help your friends hit the ground running this fall.

The OFA Training Team will walk you through every step of running your own training. We'll give you access to:
  • A full presentation you can use
  • Recordings of OFA staff running this exact training
  • Tips on how to facilitate discussion in your group
  • A guide to handle all other logistics
This is our chance to bring our communities together, and fight for our values. And it's your chance to step up and empower others at this critical time -- with OFA helping every step of the way.

Let us know you're interested in hosting a Bootcamp, and a member of the OFA Training Team will be in touch shortly:

I'm interested

Join our monthly volunteer call and learn how you can stand up for your community, engage with elected officials, and get ready to VOTE. Here are the details:

Affordability Challenges Keep Millennials on the Sidelines
By Suzanne De Vita
decorative image
Affordability is fading fast—and although millennials are eager to enter the market, and succeeding, they're bearing the brunt of the challenge, according to recent research.

Sixty-three percent of millennials under 29 are challenged by the cost of homeownership, according to a CoreLogic and RTi Research study. The expense, in fact, is their No. 1 reason for remaining a renter.

ruler

"One-third of millennial renters reported feeling they cannot afford a down payment to buy a home," says Frank Martell, CEO/president of CoreLogic. "With home prices rising quickly over the past few years and supplies low, first-time homebuyers face ever-growing challenges to find and buy affordable entry-level homes."

According to CoreLogic's June Home Price Index, prices rose 0.7 percent month-over-month and 6.8 percent year-over-year. Despite existing inventory in June perking up, demand keeps streaming in, and the imbalance is taking a toll.

Additionally, affordability is beginning to encumber sales, says Dr. Frank Nothaft, chief economist at CoreLogic.

"The rise in home prices and interest rates over the past year has eroded affordability and is beginning to slow existing-home sales in some markets," Nothaft says. "Further increases in home prices and mortgage rates over the next year will likely dampen sales and home price growth."

The findings are in line with the results of several studies this year, including one by Freddie Mac which found that affordability challenges are contributing to a downtrend in young adult homeownership.

"More needs to be done to help our first-time buyers join the homeownership class," Martell says.
Houseplants: What to Consider
By Zoe Eisenberg
decorative image
Living Room Plant FriendsLooking to add a little lush life to your living space? Just like picking paint and furniture, it's important to spend time choosing the best plants for your interior. Not only should you be considering the care your new plant friends will need, but also how they will impact your space as they grow to their full forms. Below are several tips for picking the best houseplants.

Understand sun exposure. The quickest way to shrivel a houseplant is by giving it the improper amount of sunshine. Take time to get to know the sunniest and shadiest parts of your home, and pick plants that thrive in that environment.

Consider maintenance. If you're choosing houseplants that need a good amount of TLC—water, trimming, etc.—make sure you have the time in your schedule and bandwidth in your brain to take this on. If not, pick a plant that needs minimal attention, like a succulent.

Pick proper containers. Learn the root length of the plant you're choosing, and how big it's likely to grow, then pick a container that can accommodate it.

Consider color. While varying shades of green can feel gorgeously lush, no need to stop there! Add a splash of color to your interior with orchids, peace lilies or prayer plants.
