Here’s how these decisions impact what we’re doing: as the Court delivers blows to federal oversight that make state and local governments critical in these issues, redistricting becomes ever more important. The redistricting process determines the elections for state legislatures and other local offices -- it is now these politicians who have overwhelming power over these issues. Harper, a case that tests the ridiculous Republican “independent state legislature theory” and could place redistricting almost solely in the hands of state legislatures. Vox describes the case as “the biggest threat to our democracy since January 6th.” If Republicans win, they will have even more control over redistricting in a majority of states -- creating gerrymandered maps the likes of which we have never seen before. As gun rights, climate change, and abortion come to the states, Republicans will have their way with all these issues. The Supreme Court has recently issued numerous opinions stripping away fundamental rights. But these opinions are not the end of its anti-democratic efforts. They are the beginning. But they won’t stop there: Republican state legislators are already scheming to pass new laws that would BAN people from traveling for abortion care to Democratic-held states where it’s legal. This would potentially jeopardize safe haven states and further limit access for millions of Americans in Republican-held states.
