Sula, when it comes to why the NDRC’s electoral work is so critical to protecting our democracy, A.G. Holder summed it up best: Over the past several years it’s become increasingly clear we can’t rely on the Supreme Court to protect our democracy. It has gutted the Voting Rights Act and made a series of contradictory rulings on gerrymandering that seem to favor GOP map manipulators. But the good news is our strategy has always been about way more than the Supreme Court. State courts will decide a number of important cases related to gerrymandering and voting rights in the future, which is why the GOP is desperately seeking to install justices who they think will rubber stamp their manipulated maps. We have a plan to fight back, but we need your help to do it. That plan includes targeting important races that will affect the future of our democracy across 17 different states this November, including state supreme court elections, state legislative elections, and governor’s races. But all our work takes a significant amount of resources, which is why we’re reaching out right now. Harper is the latest Republican power grab, and it may be their biggest yet. If they’re successful, it could be a disaster for our democracy. The case threatens our systems of checks and balances, and if the Republicans get what they want from the Court, Moore v. Harper would give state legislatures, many of which are gerrymandered and don’t accurately reflect voters, near-total power over how federal elections are conducted. The basis for this case is the truly fringe and dangerous "independent state legislature" theory. That means the days of judicial reviews and governors vetoing gerrymandered maps could be gone, in direct contravention of nearly a century of Supreme Court precedent. It could also mean the end of voting protections as we know them since state courts have been one of the last defenses against voter suppression laws passed by Republican-controlled state legislatures. Right now, all she knows is the joy of weekend camping with her family, tearing into her mom’s homemade meatballs and begging her dad to buy her a dirt bike. Her dad raised her on three principles: work hard, be honest and respect everyone. She spent her life watching him pour his heart into bettering his community, and she became a first-generation college graduate and pursued a career in law to protect that community. She went on to be elected Nevada’s attorney general just as the 2008 financial crisis wreaked havoc on America’s middle-class families and our economy. She took on the Big Banks with a fellow attorney general from California and secured $1.9 billion in relief for Nevada homeowners. In 2016, she would make history as the first woman from Nevada and first Latina ever elected to the United States Senate.
