, What could happen if, next term, the Trump Supreme Court sides with Republicans, rules in favor of the fringe Independent State Legislature theory, guts much of the remaining Voting Rights Act, and gives GOP-controlled legislatures near-total power over federal elections? ➞ Courts wouldn't be able to stop the GOP from gerrymandering congressional districts. ➞ The resulting representatives elected by more gerrymandered maps could support extreme policies like a national abortion ban. ➞ They could simply ignore voters, similar to what they're currently doing on the state level. ◆ For example, even though 60% of Wisconsinites are pro-choice, Wisconsin Republicans support a state law banning abortion that was written in 1849.
